This trail is generally considered medium to difficult, suitable for hikers with good physical training and sure-footedness. Some sections are exposed, highly technical, or hazardous, requiring sturdy shoes and alpine experience. While there are easier, more panoramic variations accessible from the Malcesine cable car, the main crests trail involves significant ascents and descents.
The terrain varies significantly. You'll encounter rocky paths, some sections with small boulders, and potentially short, fitted chain sections, especially near Cima Valdritta Summit (Monte Baldo). Other parts, like the Naole's Crest, offer softer ups and downs over small boulders. Expect significant elevation changes throughout.
The trail is renowned for its spectacular panoramic views. You'll be treated to 360-degree vistas over Lake Garda, the Brenta Dolomites, and the Lessini Mountains. Key highlights include the View of Malcesine and Lake Garda from the Cable Car, the View of Lake Garda from Monte Baldo Trail, and the View of Lake Garda from Monte Baldo. You'll also pass Cima delle Pozzette and the Cima Valdritta Summit (Monte Baldo), as well as unique Stone Cairns Above Lake Garda.
The best time to hike this trail is generally from May to November, when the paths are clear of snow and weather conditions are most favorable for high-altitude trekking. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.
Many routes along the Monte Baldo crests are easily accessible via the Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car, which takes you directly to popular starting points at higher altitudes. This is the most common way to begin the hike. Parking is available in Malcesine, typically near the cable car station. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can fill up quickly.
While Monte Baldo is a popular area for outdoor activities, specific regulations regarding dogs on the crests trail can vary. It's generally recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers. Always check local park rules or signage for the most current information before bringing your dog.
There are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the trails on Monte Baldo itself. However, you will need to purchase a ticket for the Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car if you choose to use it for access. Always check the official website for the cable car for current prices and operating hours.
This trail is notable for its unparalleled panoramic views of Lake Garda and the Alps, its exceptional biodiversity (earning it the nickname 'Garden of Europe' due to its rich flora), and the variety of routes available, ranging from challenging multi-day treks to easier scenic walks. The rotating Malcesine cable car also offers a unique ascent experience.
Yes, the route intersects with several other notable paths. You'll find sections that are part of the European long distance path E7 - part Italy, the Alta Via del Monte Baldo, and the Sentiero delle Creste. Other intersecting trails include Il Signor - Prai - Bocca di Navene, Rifugio Kira - Bocca Tratto Spino, and the Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri.
Monte Baldo is known as the 'Garden of Europe' due to its extraordinary biodiversity. You can expect to see a wide variety of flora, including many rare and endemic species, and a significant percentage of Alpine flora and Italian orchids. The landscape transitions from sub-Mediterranean to Alpine climates, offering diverse plant life. While specific wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, the diverse ecosystem supports various mountain animals.
Yes, for those seeking less strenuous options, there are easier, more panoramic walks accessible directly from the Malcesine cable car station. These can often be completed in about 2 hours with minimal elevation gain and are generally well-maintained. These paths still offer fantastic views without the technical difficulty of the main crests trail.
With the cable car to the mountain station and on the Monte Baldo ridge to the highest peak. The way back was steeply downhill to the middle station.
That was probably the hardest tour of my life and at the same time the most beautiful.
Very demanding high-altitude hike from the mountain station of the Monte Baldo cable car in a southerly direction. The descent at Cima Valdritta requires a lot of endurance. The panoramic views over the lake and beyond make up for the effort...
Please only experienced hikers with climbing experience should do this tour. The recording also includes the descent to the middle station. That would have taken another 3 hours on foot. But the tour is awesome
