Hiking
Embark on the Wildcat Trail, an easy 4.4-mile (7.1 km) hike that brings you directly onto the valley floor of Monument Valley. As you navigate the loop, you will gain 435 feet (133 metres) in elevation, offering close-up views of the famous Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. Expect to spend around 1 hour and 58 minutes immersed in this unique desert landscape, surrounded by towering rock formations and distinctive flora.
This route is the only self-guided hiking trail within Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, giving you independent access to its wonders. Be prepared for sections with deep, soft sand, which can make the return ascent more challenging. The trail also crosses several washes; these can become impassable after heavy rain, so check conditions before you go. Consider starting your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon for the best light and cooler temperatures.
The Wildcat Trail provides a rare opportunity to experience the geological grandeur of Monument Valley from a ground-level perspective. The landscape is constantly changing, especially with the shifting light, making it a photographer's delight. Remember that Monument Valley sits at an elevation of 4,838 feet above sea level, which can make physical activity feel more strenuous than usual.

The Wildcat Trail begins near the Monument Valley Visitor Center. You can park your vehicle at the visitor center's parking lot, which is also the trailhead for this hike.
Yes, the Wildcat Trail is located within the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which requires an entrance fee. This fee grants you access to the park and its trails, including the Wildcat Trail. No separate hiking permit is needed for this specific trail.
The Wildcat Trail is generally rated as moderate. While much of the loop is relatively flat, there are sections with deep, soft sand, especially on the initial descent and final ascent, which can be challenging. The elevation of Monument Valley (4,838 feet) can also make the hike feel more strenuous. It is suitable for beginners who are prepared for sandy terrain and a moderate workout.
The Wildcat Trail is approximately 3.2 miles (5.1 km) long, and the full loop typically takes between 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
Yes, leashed dogs are permitted on the Wildcat Trail. Please ensure your dog is on a leash at all times and that you clean up after them to help keep the trail pristine.
The trail primarily consists of sand, dirt, and rock. You'll encounter sections with deep, soft sand, particularly on the descent to the valley floor and the return ascent. The path also crosses several washes, which are usually dry but could become impassable during heavy rain.
The trail offers incredible views as it circles around the majestic West Mitten Butte. You'll get up close to the famous Mitten Buttes (East and West) and Merrick Butte. Key highlights include the Monument Valley Visitor Center, View on East Mitten Butte, and View on West Mitten Butte, providing panoramic views of Monument Valley's iconic rock formations.
The Wildcat Trail is unique because it is the only self-guided hiking trail within the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. This provides a rare opportunity for independent exploration of the valley floor, offering a more intimate and solitary experience of the landscape compared to guided tours or overlooks.
The trail can be hiked year-round, but spring and fall offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summer can be very hot, and winter can be cold. For the most dramatic scenery, consider hiking at sunrise or sunset to experience the stunning light and shadows on the buttes.
Given the sandy terrain and desert environment, it's recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, preferably with good ankle support to handle the soft sand. Bring plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and layers of clothing as temperatures can change. A map and compass or GPS device are also advisable.
While the Wildcat Trail is primarily a self-contained loop, sections of the route do intersect with parts of the Sacred Monument Tours 2h trail. However, the Wildcat Trail itself is designed for independent exploration around the West Mitten Butte.
Monument Valley is for many the image of the American West. The beautiful red walls, rocks and sand desert have been used over the years as a backdrop for various films, photo shoots and advertisements. It is more of a flat deserted landscape with the occasional rock formation of tens of meters high. There is only 1 walk in this park that you can do yourself without a guide: The Wildcat Trail. A beautiful hike with beautiful views and almost no other hikers. The strong headwind made this trail quite tough at times.
Great hike through a gigantic landscape. You can only do this circular hike on foot. It's a pity that you can't explore the area in more detail, but of course it's absolutely fine for nature conservation reasons and out of respect for the Navajos.
The 7-kilometer Wildcat Trail is the only hiking trail in Monument Valley that can be hiked without a Navajo guide. The narrow trail is particularly impressive due to its many high cliffs and leads around West Mitte Butte. Many of the cliffs are familiar from famous westerns that were filmed there, such as The Devil's Captain from 1949, starring John Wayne. I saw a lizard by the side of the trail, and despite the late evening, the temperature was still quite high, so I had to ration my water carefully. For me, this trail is one of the most beautiful and impressive hikes of my trip to the USA. For the musical accompaniment, I chose the song "Wildcat" by Ratatat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y8pDfdrEzU&list=RD8y8pDfdrEzU&start_radio=1
We were in the valley yesterday evening for sunset, but clouds moved in front of the sun. Nevertheless, the light was unique, and this morning it was amazing. The Wildcat Trail is highly recommended, best right after sunrise, 1. because of the light, 2. because of the warmth.
The Wilcat Trail is the only hiking trail in Monument Valley that can be walked without a guide. From the visitor center around the West Mitten Butte, he gives great impressions of this unique Wild West setting.
Fantastic hike in this amazing place. The photos simply can not capture the beauty and grandeur of this place. One photo shows the cabins where we stayed, with the most amazing views during the day, beautiful sunsets, and fantastic dark skies at night so we could see so many stars (even managed to faintly see Andromeda). Sorry for so many photos but just could not stop taking them.
