Darfeld Castle

Highlight • Castle

A very beautiful, idyllically located and typically Münsterland moated castle. Built sometime around 1600 and restored after a fire in the early 1900s. It is privately owned and inhabited. The cycle path leads directly past the castle and offers beautiful views - tip!

Kattenstrang Path

Highlight • Trail

Fun, short and very idyllic dirt trail. Slightly rooted but still good to drive. Nothing for speed fanatics but rather something for connoisseurs. Here you cycle slightly elevated, as if on a small dam along the water (inlet of the moat?) and the rows of trees.

History

Bishop Liudger baptized in Billerbeck and founded the parish church of St. John the Baptist there before 800. A chapel dedicated to the saint was built in the 11th century at the place where he died or in the vicinity, and was probably associated with a cult of St. Ludgerus from the beginning. The secondary patron was St. Nicholas of Myra. In the 15th century, this chapel was extended in Gothic style. Under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen (1650–1678), the tower was raised by one storey. Towards the end of the 19th century, the building was demolished to make way for a new building. The present provost church was built between 1892 and 1898 on the foundations of the essentially Romanesque Ludgeri Church and a mortuary chapel built around 1735 by the master builder Wilhelm Rincklake (1851–1927). He designed the nave in the form of a basilica with a transept and the 100 m high pair of towers from the Baumberg sandstone found in the nearby Baumbergen mountains.

St. Ludgerus Cathedral, Billerbeck

Highlight • Religious Site

The sandstone cathedral with its two towers is one of the most impressive buildings in Münsterland. From the inside it looks just as magnificent as from the outside. Also around the cathedral you will find many sandstone buildings that are so typical of the area.

The town's elevated location offers stunning views of the region's meadows and forests. A visit in May, when the rapeseed fields are in full bloom, is particularly worthwhile.

Sit on the benches and stretch your legs, on hot days it is so pleasant when you get the water drops. Plus an ice cream, perfect! 😄
