Evangelical Church of Milkel

Highlight • Religious Site

The church belongs to the Evangelical parish.
A parish church in Milkel is mentioned as early as 1322. The last information on religious affiliation comes from 1925. At that time 419 of 422 inhabitants were Evangelical Lutheran (99%). On June 23, 1960, a Sorbian Evangelical Church Congress took place in Milkel.
Milkel Church was originally built in the early 14th century and first mentioned in 1322. In 1550 the church was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt, in 1616 it was enlarged. The church was spared from the village fire in 1752. In the years 1744, 1827 and 1838 extensive renovation work was carried out on the church. In 1857, large parts of the church were demolished and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style, incorporating older parts. The interior was restored in 1890.[1] In 1996 the church was equipped with an electric bell ringing system.

The church is a plaster structure surrounded by buttresses, with a recessed choir in three-eighths and a massive square west tower.[2] The nave has large arched windows, in the middle of the south wall there is an arched entrance portal. Tracery windows and oxeye windows are located in the area of the sanctuary. The slightly retracted tower is structured with corner pilaster strips and a round arch frieze, the bell storey has beveled corners, two sound openings each on the north, south, east and west sides and is also provided with a round arch frieze. The tower is completed by a pyramidal roof with a sphere and a cross.

Inside, the church has a flat plaster ceiling and a single-storey, simple, three-sided wooden gallery. On the north side of the sanctuary there are loge rooms with round arch and segment arch windows, some of which are stained glass windows with depictions of the evangelists.
