Schloss Colmdorf with castle café

Highlight • Castle

The town of Colmdorf, then known as Kolbendorf, was first mentioned in 1386. The wooden predecessor of the current castle stood a little further south and was first mentioned in documents in the middle of the 16th century. The castle, which had been rebuilt after a fire in 1620, was given as a gift by Margrave Christian Ernst to his wife Erdmuthe Sophie in 1662. In 1754, the Margrave's minister Baron von Reitzenstein bought it and had it rebuilt in its current form. Just a few years later, Margrave Friedrich bought it back and gave it to his second wife Sophie Caroline Marie of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. It was also named Carolinenruhe after her. In the following years, the owners changed frequently, and Isolde Beidler, a daughter of Richard Wagner, also lived here with her family from 1901 to 1911. The castle faces a large garden with many sculptures.

Röhrensee Park and Zoo

Highlight • Structure

The park in the south of Bayreuth is a magnet for all generations. Enclosures and aviaries are embedded in the park design in the midst of old trees on the lake. Animals such as the Bennett kangaroo, Temminck tragopan and flamingos live in a species-appropriate manner in naturally designed enclosures and represent the biodiversity on earth.

As a visitor, you will find botanical features and colorful summer flower beds in the park as well as real nature experiences. A large playground offers various climbing opportunities, a water playground and play equipment for people of all ages.

In summer, a boat rental provides additional variety. The gastronomic offer with restaurant and kiosk rounds off the excursion.

Viertelstein Rock Formation near Mistelbach

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Viertelstein near Mistelbach is a free-standing sandstone rock, which the locals also call the Devil's Rock. The striking, isolated rock shows beautifully the so-called honeycomb weathering on its surface. Further information is available on the information board set up on the bike path.

Fortified Church of St. Mary

Highlight • Religious Site

The history of the Evangelical Lutheran pilgrimage church and fortified church of St. Marien zum Gesee as a place of worship and burial dates back to the pre-Christian Slavic period. A Marian pilgrimage has existed since the 11th century and continued into this century after the introduction of the Reformation (1528). However, the old image of the Virgin Mary was kidnapped by Napoleonic troops in 1806. The Marian frescoes from the Gothic period were uncovered again during restoration work. The church path with sandstone slabs up to the church is the historical pilgrimage path that ascends from the town center.
