Bainbridge Village

Highlight • River

A chocolate-box village nestled amongst the Dales, Bainbridge is simply lovely. Surrounded by green farmland, the village has quiet streets lined with grey-stone cottages, tea shops and a pub. Close to the village, you will find Bainbridge Roman Fort as well as the shortest river in Britain – the River Bain.

In days gone by, an ancient horn would sound to guide foresters and travellers to the village through Wensleydale Forest. Although this tradition no longer exists, the horn can still be found in the Rose and Crown Pub and you will hear it played at 10pm from 27th September (Holy Rood) until Shrove Tuesday.

Here's where they make proper Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, so you can go into the visitors centre and explore their 'cheese experience' if you're interested. Alternatively, go to the shop and cafe for a quick sit-down. The cafe is open daily from 9:00am to 3.30pm, and has beautiful views from its huge windows, as well as a great cheese-y menu.
