The Haunstetten airfield heath is an important nature reserve in the south of Augsburg, Bavaria. It represents one of the last remnants of the once widespread Lech heaths and is home to a variety of rare animal and plant species.

History and significance

Originally, the Lech heaths extended over large parts of the region. Due to urbanization and agricultural use, only a few areas remain today. The airfield heath owes its name to the former Augsburg-Haunstetten airfield, which was in operation until 1968. After its closure, part of the heath was preserved and developed into a valuable biotope. In April 2020, the area was officially designated as a protected landscape component in order to ensure the continued existence of the structurally rich calcareous grasslands with their typical heath flora and fauna.

Flora and fauna

The airfield heath is characterized by a high level of biodiversity. Numerous rare and endangered plant species can be found here, including the cross gentian (Gentiana cruciata), which is endangered in Bavaria. Various insect species, such as the Blue butterfly, are also native here.

Current developments

In recent years there have been efforts to build on parts of the airfield heath. However, nature conservation organizations such as the BUND Naturschutz in Bayern e.V. have successfully campaigned for the preservation of the area. Through joint efforts, it was possible to achieve protection in order to preserve the valuable biodiversity in the long term.

Visit and information

The airfield heath is open to visitors and offers nature lovers the opportunity to experience the unique heath landscape. Guided tours are offered regularly, where interested parties can learn more about the special features of the area. Further information and current event information can be found on the website of the BUND Naturschutz in Bayern e.V.

The Haunstetten airfield heath is a valuable natural jewel in Augsburg that has been preserved through community commitment and still requires protection and care.

The WWK Arena 🏟️ can be seen clearly between Haunstetten and Inningen. Especially in the evening when it is also illuminated is very beautiful.
