Mutterturm and the Herkomer Museum

Highlight • Monument

With its golden roof, the Mother Tower rises from the parkland as seen downstream from the Lech River. This historicist building, constructed in the style of a Norman keep from large tuff blocks, was built in 1884 by Hubert von Herkomer in honor and memory of his mother.

Born in Waal in 1849, he moved to England with his parents. He received comprehensive training as a painter and was at the height of his fame at the time of the Mother Tower's construction. The tower was built according to his own plans, likely influenced by the American Henry Hobson Richardson, as an eccentric artist's studio and furnished to a high standard. Today, it is also used for weddings.

His strong ties to his old homeland ensured the city of Landsberg received the artist's estate. The small house next to the tower is the Herkomer Museum and houses a significant collection of paintings and prints by the highly successful painter and graphic artist from England. At the initiative of the visionary motorist, the world's first touring car rally, the Herkomer Competition, took place in 1905.

View of the old town of Landsberg with Parish Church of the Assumption.

The church is first mentioned at this site in 1219. During the late Romanesque it is expanded as a three-aisled basilica and expanded by a choir. The baptismal font from this time has been preserved.

The foundation stone was laid by Abbot Leonhard von Wessobrunn in 1458. The late Gothic pillar basilica was built according to plans by Matthäus Ensinger, who also contributed decisively to the construction of Ulm and the completion of the Strasbourg Cathedral. The masonry consists mostly of bricks. The facades are mostly slurried today, sometimes even plastered. The construction was carried out under the direction of Strasbourg master builders Valentin Kindlin and Ulrich Kiffhaber. 1466 the consecration takes place. The carved wooden Madonna on the north side of the choir, which was built around 1440, probably comes from Ulm Hans Multscher.

From 1700, the New Town Hall was built in several phases. From 1719 to 1721 the building was extended by Dominikus Zimmermann and redesigned with a finely structured, towering gable front. The windows were staggered in size depending on the importance of the rooms behind them. The stucco facade is one of the most important profane creations of the master builder, who lived as a citizen in Landsberg from 1716 to 1757 and also temporarily served as a mayor here.

The witch quarter is very well hidden and relatively difficult to find. Unfortunately, the surroundings are not well maintained and a bit dirty 👎. The visit was worth it.

The Landsberg Bridge was mentioned in a document in 1150.
It replaced the previous ford in a shallow part of the Lech weir.

The Lechner is called the Karolinenwehr.
The Karolinenwehr is a four-stage weir of the Lech near the old town of Landsberg am Lech.

To the right of the weir system, which was probably built in 1364, is the Mühlbach, which used to drive mills and is now used to generate electricity. The originally single-stage weir was severely damaged several times by floods and was expanded in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries by installing additional stages. The weir has been rebuilt several times over the past decades, most recently between 1993 and 1996.
A bypass existed for rafting, on which rafts were led around the weir over the wooden plank route of the "long journey" for a fee. After rafting declined in the 20th century, the "long journey" was canceled in the 1970s.
