Nymphenburg Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

The palace offers a truly historic experience. The grounds are breathtaking, and in fine weather, a leisurely stroll through the park is recommended. To avoid long waits, it's advisable to book tickets in advance, as access to the palace is limited to a certain number of visitors at one time. This restriction helps prevent overcrowding. Ample parking is also available, making the entire visit a pleasant experience.

One should have been here at any time of the year. 😊 The construction took place in sections and is based on Italian models. The park was also redesigned several times.

Amalienburg (Nymphenburg Palace Park)

Highlight • Historical Site

Hunting lodge in Nymphenburg Palace Park: The Amalienburg was built between 1734 and 1739 according to designs by François Cuvilliés. This pleasure and hunting lodge was a gift from Elector Karl Albrecht to his wife, Maria Amalia. The round Hall of Mirrors, or Grand Salon, is decorated in Bavarian colors of silver and blue, and, like the other rooms, is richly adorned. The Hunting Room contains numerous paintings. The Pheasant Room and the kitchen, with their wall decorations painted and waxed in the Chinese style on fabric wallpaper, have a rather exotic feel. Dutch tiles and vases further enhance this foreign character.

The southern canal feeds the Badenburger See. Apart from the small amount of water that flows out via the small stream at the Pan Monument, the canal diverts the lake's water to the east. In the Baroque period, gondolas and boats used to travel here for the pleasure of the court's entourage.

Nymphenburg Palace Park

Highlight • Natural

The Nymphenburg Canal is an artificial waterway in Munich that was built between 1701 and 1703 under Elector Max Emanuel as a form of forced labor. It continues the optical axis of the palace, the line of sight from Nymphenburg Palace to the east towards the city center.

Nymphenburg Palace Park

Highlight • Historical Site

Nymphenburg Palace Park is one of Germany's largest and most important examples of garden art. It forms a unified whole with Nymphenburg Palace and the surrounding park pavilions. The park is located in western Munich, in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district (named after the palace), bordering Pasing-Obermenzing. The park is a listed monument and a protected landscape. Almost its entire area is also designated as a Natura 2000 site.

The artful integration of formal garden and landscape park is considered a masterpiece of garden design and makes the entire complex of palace and park a popular attraction. It is bordered on its eastern side, facing the city, by Nymphenburg Palace and its surrounding circular garden. On all other sides, it is largely enclosed by the historic garden wall. To the north lies the Botanical Garden, and beyond that, across Menzinger Straße, the Kapuzinerhölzl (Capuchin Grove).

The park's artistic integration of formal garden and landscape park is considered a masterpiece of garden design and makes the entire complex of palace and park a popular tourist destination. The original Baroque garden was modeled on the French gardens of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Versailles. Its current form is the result of a fundamental redesign by Friedrich Ludwig Sckell beginning in 1799. The park within the garden walls covers 180 hectares, while the entire complex encompasses 229 hectares.

The garden consists of the large, naturalistic section in the west and the formally designed area near the palace. The central canal divides the park into a northern and a southern section. Water is supplied from the west via the Würm River and the Pasing-Nymphenburg Canal. The water is then channeled east and northeast through two canals and north via the Hartmannshofer Bach stream.

The smaller Pagodenburg Lake with the Pagodenburg is located in the northern section, while the larger Badenburg Lake with the Temple of Apollo and the Badenburg is in the southern section. The Green Pump House, with its waterwheels and pressure pumps for the garden fountain, stands in the village within the southern part of the park. The Amalienburg dominates the southeastern part of the park.

To the east, the palace park borders the articulated palace building. On the garden side of the palace, the large parterre garden extends, occupying the central part of the rectangle enclosed by canals and lying along the canal's central axis.
