Sheldon Parish Church

Highlight • Historical Site

The original church was said to have had the largest churchyard in England, inasmuch as the church stood on the highway and was unenclosed. By 1864 the old church was in such a dilapidated state that it was unsafe to enter.

The new church was designed by the architect Samuel Rollinson of Chesterfield. The foundation stone was laid by Rev. H.K. Cornish, vicar of Bakewell, on 31 May 1864 and built by Mr. Gyte of Ashford. It was consecrated on 7 October 1864 by the Bishop of Lichfield.

Great Shacklow Wood

Highlight • Forest

Great Shacklow Wood is a pretty woodland on a steep bank above the River Wye. As you hike underneath the dense canopy, birdsong, atmospheric light and wonderful fragrances combine. In spring, the woodland has abundant wild garlic and bluebells. Some of the trails are quite steep and technical, so take care. It’s well worth exploring nearby Deep Dale if you’re hiking here.

Deepdale

Highlight • Gorge

Deepdale is known for its display of cowslips and wild orchids. The cowslips are just coming through now so I think the best time to do this walk is now and during the next few weeks. The Cock & Pullet pub in Sheldon is recommended for reasonable pub grub either before or after the walk.

Ashford Bobbin Mill

Highlight • Monument

Ashford Bobbin Mill is a historic building on the edge of Great Shacklow Wood by the River Wye. It was built in 1870 and was originally a bone mill which created fertiliser. The mill was later converted to make shuttles and bobbins for the local mills. Ashford Bobbin Mill is Grade II-listed.
