View of the Lünen power plant from Halde Tockhausen

Highlight • Viewpoint

Halde Minister Achenbach IV - Tockhausen

If you promise yourself primarily a good view of the surrounding area, then you are wrong here. You can get them in some places where the vegetation is more open or has been cut free and gives you some great views. If the visibility is good, you can see not only the old minister Achenbach shaft 4 with the Lüntec Tower ("Colani-Ei"), but also the Lünen power plant and the city center, but also as far as Dortmund's city center.

But if you are looking for a climb that is not only suitable for hiking, but also suitable for bicycles, then the diverse vegetation will delight you. Many animal and insect species have found their home here in the dense forest-like vegetation. The heap is made accessible by a very interesting network of paths, which allows you to choose between a very fast and steep or a flatter and longer ascent. With the bike, the flatter ascent and the steeper descent are ideal as soon as you have the basics of driving and braking techniques halfway out. Of course, it's a lot more fun on the MTB, even for the less experienced ;-)

The Lüntec Tower (also called Colani Egg or UFO) is the futuristic redesign of a winding tower of the former Minister Achenbach coal mine in the Brambauer district of Lüner.
After mine 4 at the Minister Achenbach colliery was shut down in 1990, RAG used the site for apprentice training until 1992. The Lünen Technology Center, or Lüntec for short, was then built in the administration and Kauen buildings built in 1922 and was founded on October 11, 1991. The renovation work that began in 1993 was completed in May 1995 with the placement of the Colani egg on the winding tower.
The object, designed based on a sketch by designer Luigi Colani, is intended to clearly illustrate the structural change in the Ruhr area. On the Industrial Heritage Route it is one of several themed routes.
The “UFO” has been shining in new splendor since mid-2009. After extensive renovation work, a business lounge was created at a height of 35 meters with a panoramic view of Lünen and the surrounding area. The shaft hall became the foyer and is used as an event room.
In 2008, the ensemble was expanded to include the Black Cube, which expanded the technology center's office space. In this context, it received the Artwork of the Year 2009 award from the Lünen Art Association.
At RUHR.2010, the building ensemble was presented together with other art and cultural objects as part of the Shining Heads of the Lippe Region project.

The bridge over the canal offers a beautiful view on one side in the adjoining nature reserve and on the other on the industrial side of Lünen.

Datteln-Hamm Canal

Highlight • River

The Datteln-Hamm Canal (abbreviation DHK) begins in Datteln as a junction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. From here it runs in an easterly direction through Lünen and Bergkamen to Hamm. Here it ends in a large harbor basin in Uentrop.

The first section of the Datteln-Hamm Canal, including the Hamm lock, was opened to traffic with 600 t ships on July 17, 1914. In 1926, work began on extending the canal from Hamm to Schmehausen. In 1930, the first pile-driving strokes were carried out on sheet pile piles for the construction of the Werries lock. After the lock was completed, shipping began on August 23, 1933 on the second section of the DHK to Schmehausen. The planned extension to Lippstadt was never realized due to the lack of traffic. The total length of the DHK is 47.2 km.

In addition to shipping, the canal is also used to feed water into the canal system. In Hamm, water is taken from the Lippe in a feed structure and fed into the canal system (Datteln-Hamm Canal, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Rhine-Herne Canal and Wesel-Datteln Canal). The city ports of Lünen and Hamm and several power station ports are the most important transshipment points at DHK, where coal, cement, sand, gravel, gas, oil and petrol in particular move from or to inland waterway vessels. The transport volume is around 7 million tons per year.

In the meantime, the importance of sport boat tourism and the recreational use of the DKH has increased more and more. Along the Datteln-Hamm Canal, as on the other canals in the Ruhr area, there are a number of harbors, stops and resting places for recreational boaters.

Konik Horses in Lünen

Highlight • Natural

Koniks 🐴 live as “landscape managers” on a wasteland south of the Lippe. This robust Eastern European horse breed can spend all year round in the 6 hectare area and feels extremely comfortable here. In addition to grass and tall shrubs, the animals also eat young trees. This means that the diverse mosaic of bushes, individual trees and open areas for birds, amphibians and many other animal species is preserved.
