Oil and Grain Mill Overmeyer Halverde

Highlight • Historical Site

The demonstrations and exhibitions at Hof Overmeyer always enjoy great popularity and great interest.

The focus is of course on the mighty double mill system, consisting of an oil and a grain mill, fed by the Halverder Aa. The historical relic is one of the few water-powered double mills preserved in the Steinfurt district that were once typical and common in Westphalia.

The current owner, Hubert Overmeyer, who restored the oil mill with the help of a mill builder, demonstrates the system while it is in operation. According to Overmeyer, the exact age of the mill is still unknown today. However, the first documents on the double mill system go back to the year 1720. But the mechanics of the oil mill have remained unchanged to this day and correspond to the state of the art from the middle of the 19th century.

Outside, Overmeyer explains to the guests how the power of the water wheel is transferred to the mill. The huge wooden gears then turn inside the oil mill. Hubert Overmeyer puts three hand scoops of rapeseed in the barrel, which weighs several tons. "That's around 10 pounds of seeds," explains Müller Overmeyer to the interested audience. "We gain around three liters of pure rapeseed oil from this."

The oil hammering begins in the pan mill, a powerful crushing mechanism consisting of three millstones. In addition to rapeseed, beet seeds, flax and poppy seeds, beechnuts and sunflower seeds are used as raw materials. After the milling process, the oil is pressed out in a larger wooden block, the press or oil drawer, with the help of a wooden hammer. During the ramming, the oil flows into the oil pans below. The oil obtained is sieved and then stored in a cool place. Visitors can even taste the fresh oil during the demonstration and are surprised by the intense taste.

Not only its unbeatable pink color makes this juniper grove an absolute must-see. An approximately 500-meter-long adventure trail - some of which can be walked barefoot - tells you interesting facts about the natural and cultural-historical features of this landscape at six stations.
