Double Track from Dunwich to Walberswick

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A nice section of double track leading away from the forest at Dunwich to Walberswick. Beware there are those among us who think it's a footpath and it can be busy so please be curious. Also there's a nice drop with a gate at the bottom where is becomes a footpath so be on the brakes.

On the tidal estuary of the River Blyth, Walberswick is a picturesque village. The centre is set around a village green with a dune backed beach, a cafe and a pub. The interesting village church, St Andrew's, was built in the ruins of its much grander predecessor in the 18th century. Although popular, it is much quieter than neighbouring Southwold.
During the summer months there is a ferry across the river which links Walberswick with Southwold.

Dunwich Forest is a peaceful woodland that can easily be linked with a walk on Dunwich Heath, the nearby marshes and wetlands or an exploration of the historic Dunwich village – once the capital of East Anglia.

The forest is a mixture of broadleaved and coniferous woodland. Much of it is currently being rewilded to return it to its natural state that was present before its conifer plantations. Keep an eye out for grazing Dartmoor ponies in its northern reaches.

Dunwich is a tiny village that hides a rich history. Once a bustling medieval port and the capital of the kingdom of East Anglia, it is thought Dunwich had a similar importance to London at the time. However, its location on a tumultuous coastline has led to much of its former glory being washed away.

It also has its fair share of folklore. The 'dark heart of Dunwich' is the story of a broken-hearted maiden who haunts the seafront, desperately seeking her lost love. It is also said that, if you listen closely, you can hear the bells of the former port over the wind during storms.

Really fun and varied course. Mixture of wiodland, mud, sand, stones and a short stint of waist deep water!
