Friedewald Water Castle

Highlight • Castle

The moated castle of Friedewald was built in the 13th century at this strategic point, because medieval military and long-distance trade routes met here. After it was destroyed in the Seven Years' War, it lost its importance. It was only partially used. Today you can visit them and climb the thick tower.

You can find more information and the opening hours here: museum-friedewald.de/museum/oeffnungszeiten_und_preise/oeffnungszeiten_und_preise.html.

Solztal Children's Trail

Highlight • Trail

The Solztal children's path is beautifully embedded in the Solztal between the districts of Sorga and Kathus. With the help of many ideas from the Sorga primary school children, an approx. 3 km long circular route with numerous play stations and information boards was built.
Children and adults can playfully get to know their natural surroundings in the woods and fields with all their senses. The family walk gets a completely new quality here. Suddenly it is fun to run in the forest, to discover a new exciting play station every hundred meters and to go on adventures in the forest.
On colored boards there is a lot of information about the forest and its inhabitants, the local bird life, the stream, the floodplain, insects, amphibians and much more.

Located directly on the supraregional Solztal cycle path, the children's path can be easily reached by bike. By car you can find the way at the end of the street "Sölzerhöfe" in Bad Hersfeld-Sorga. Accessible by bike from the forest on a beautiful trail.
It is very cool to cross the stream ... over a bridge or over stones with rope.

Bad Hersfeld Abbey Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

After a major fire in 1038, the new building began and the collegiate church was built. In 1761, when the French army withdrew, burned down the supplies they had piled up in the collegiate church. One of the largest sacred halls in Germany went up in flames and was almost completely destroyed.

The Katharinenturm only houses one bell today: the Lullus bell. As the inscription shows, it dates from 1038 and is Germany's oldest cast bell.

Gießlingskirche Ruins

Highlight • Religious Site

Ruins of a village church. The settlement of Gosselndorf was located here, first mentioned in 1183, but then abandoned around 1312.

There's also a legend about the "funeral procession at the Gießlingskirche": Farmhands, who had originally agreed to meet at dawn, mistakenly set out around midnight because the night was unusually bright to begin their work. A glow of light could be seen in the ruins, and organ music could be heard. Then a funeral procession emerged from the remains of the wall, a dead body was carried on a stretcher, others walked behind it in line, holding their own heads in their hands. Well, and it goes on a bit further. I'll spare you that for now. ;) Apparently, you can still see the aforementioned glow from the highway today, but it's probably just young people having a little fun.

Definitely a place worth stopping at for a quick stop.
