The Limes marked the border between the Roman Empire and a huge empire characterized by beech forests, low mountain ranges and marshy valley bottoms, which the Romans called "Germania". The Germans did not feel as one people but as members of different tribes. The CHATTEN in the central Hessian area were probably rather peaceful and traded with the Romans. Roman soldiers were very popular with the dashing Chatten girls because they were entitled to a pension after their service. The CHERUSKER, on the other hand, fought bitter battles with the Romans in the area of today's Westphalia. The Varus Battle in the Teutoburg Forest with the victorious Germanic general Hermann der Cherusker is particularly well known.
