Commander's Castle, Kerpen-Blatzheim

Highlight • Castle

Former knight's castle of the Teutonic Order in Blatzheim.
Not to be missed on the road to Bergerhausen on the Neffelbach.
Can be rented for parties or whatever these days.

1602 built the Teutonic Knights Heinrich von Reuschenberg to Setterich commander's castle as a summer residence of the Commander of the Teutonic Order (Kommende Jungen-Biesen).

After French troops had occupied the left bank of the Rhine from 1794 to 1802, Joseph von Schaesberg retired to the commander's castle and died there in 1812 as the last Teutonic Knights in Blatzheim.
When the ecclesiastical possessions in Cologne and Blatzheim were secularized in 1802 and the Order of Napoleon was abolished in 1809, the commander's castle was donated by Napoleon to the French General Georges Mouton de Lobau. Later it became German-owned and continued as an agricultural estate ,

There is a very nice path along the Neffelbach between Bergerhausen and Blatzheim. Well-tended garden plots on the right (big bravo for Zoe’s magic forest 👍💐🌸🌼🌹) orchards on the left. Wonderful wildlife with lots of butterflies

Bergerhausen Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle looks fantastic from every angle!

The moated castle was built in the 13th century and was the ancestral seat of the Knights of Bergerhausen. Around 1320, the brothers of Bergerhausen sold part of the property to the Mariengradenstift (St. Mary's Abbey) in Cologne. The Archbishops of Cologne acquired the lordship to defend their territory.

In 1334, Archbishop Walram granted Bergerhausen Castle to the knight Hans-Ulrich von Bergerhausen in recognition of services rendered.

Around 1430, his descendants fortified the castle with strong fortifications.

Wayside Cross in Langenich

Highlight • Monument

Here next to the wayside cross there are some benches and a table. The playground could be interesting for the little ones while the grown-ups take a breather.
