Watouplein and Claus Monument

Highlight • Monument

During the summer, Watouplein is the center of the Watou Arts Festival. You will find, among other things, Roger Raveel's Claus monument. Raveel donated this work to Watou as a lasting remnant of his summer “Poetry around Roger Raveel” in 1993.

Sint-Bavokerk Watou

Highlight • Religious Site

The current hall church is a 16th century Gothic-style conversion of the original Romanesque church from the second half of the 12th century. The brick part of the nave and the lower part of the tower are remains of the old church.

The pseudo-Romanesque gable with rose window and part of the octagonal crossing tower are 19th century.

In the church you will find the mausoleums of the first counts of Watou, Karel van Ydeghem (+ 1630) and Maria van Cortewyle and of the mystic Karel Grimminck (1676-1728).
The church has been a protected monument since 1939.

Nine Elms British Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

The name of this cemetery, "Nine Elms British Cemetery," comes from the Flemish word elm. An elm is a lep (tree).

A small wood of elms lay in the vicinity of this cemetery. Throughout the war, this location was in no man's land.

The cemetery was established and used by the 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations when they were transferred from Brandhoek and Lijssenthoek, respectively, to Poperinge in September 1917. Almost all the graves in plots I through IX originate from this Casualty Clearing Station, when it operated in this area during the Battle of Ypres, until December 1917. The other plots, X through XV, date from the period of the German Spring Offensive—early March 1918 to October 12. This cemetery also contains the graves of 37 German soldiers from World War I and 22 WWII graves dating from the Allied retreat to Dunkirk in 1940.

The Devil's Chapel or Chapel of Our Lady of Comfort of the Troubled in Boeschepe.

The story goes back to 1768 when a farmer, perhaps somewhat drunk, reportedly came face to face with the devil around midnight. The farmer managed to escape and escaped unscathed. Another version claims that the devil lived here and targeted a farmer who always had to pass this spot in the evenings. The farmer was so frightened that he always had to take a long detour to avoid it.

Finally, the farmer decided to have a chapel built on this spot and place it under the protection of Our Lady. This was done, and the devil refused to budge.

The chapel is located not far from Katsberg. Through the grille in the front door, one can see a statue of Mary with a pale, frightened face. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duivelskapel

Popularly known as the Devil's Chapel or chapel to ward off fear.
