Castle Hill Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

one of the lesser known but most enjoyable climbs of the Kent Downs is Castle Hill. Starting after the M20 underpass with only a shallow gradient, the climb soon ramps up after the Pilgrims Way to an average of 10%, with a left hairpin turn. The climb ends at a dead end by the White Horse Wood Country Park.

Pilgrims' Way

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Anyone who wants to walk the "Pilgrim's Way" with Canterbury Cathedral as their destination, not just as a long-distance hiking trail for pleasure (whether on foot or the faster option by bike), but also consciously follow the medieval tradition as a pilgrim, may find some inspiration on this website =>> pilgrimways.org.uk/the-pilgrims-way-winchester-southwark-to-canterbury

Lenham Cross

Highlight • Natural Monument

The attentive hiker or pilgrim has repeatedly encountered a wide variety of types of crosses on his way: made of stone (often granite) or wood, with or without the body of the crucified Christ, artistically decorated or deliberately kept simple, towering high and thus dominating the surroundings from afar or rather smaller...
This hiking highlight, however, is sure to take a top spot in the ranking of the most unusual crosses. It does not tower up, but is quite the opposite, cut into the ground so that the light background of this lying monument stands out clearly from the surrounding green of the lawn. The basic idea of such a design - known in technical jargon as geoglyps - is similar to the "Nazca Lines" in South America, which are thousands of years older; or, to give a much closer example, the "White Horse" on Uffington Hill (see komoot.com/de-de/highlight/283565 ).
The sad reason for its construction is to commemorate the victims of the First World War.

All Saints Church, Hollingbourne

Highlight • Historical Site

It is not so common for a Christian place of worship – which encompasses the whole of heaven – to be dedicated to “ALL SAINTS”. Usually it is one (or occasionally two) named saints who hold the patronage of a church – and thus usually also of the parish or town in which it is located.

But to find the origin of such a dedication, one has to go far back in history, because the model for this practice of dedication to ALL SAINTS can be seen as a pagan custom, according to which there were already central temples in pre-Christian times that were dedicated to all deities (PANTHEON). The probably most famous Pantheon, formerly a pagan temple and now a Christian place of worship, is located in the Italian capital.

Hollingbourne Manor

Highlight • Historical Site

Hollingbourne Manor was built during the Elizabethan era. It was custom for manor houses to be constructed in the shape of a letter 'E' in honour of the Queen, but Hollingbourne was not finished. Only a small amount of brickwork exists of the final wing.
