St Bartholomew's Church, Burwash

Highlight • Historical Site

Only the thick-walled tower survives from the original Norman church (built in 1090) with evidence of its origin being discernible by the great width of the mortar in which the stones are bedded and which can be seen from the outside.[4]

Rudyard Kipling Statue, Burwash

Highlight • Monument

A bronze statue of Rudyard Kipling sits in the High Street of the East Sussex village of Burwash. Kipling lived in the village for 34 years, from 1902 until his death in 1936. His house, Batemans, was just outside the village and is currently in the care of the National Trust and hence is open to visitors. The statue is by Victoria Atkinson and comissioned by Burwash parish Counci. It was unveiled in February 2019.

Burwash Village

Highlight • Settlement

Nice little village that you can walk to from Bateman's across the fields. Or vice versa. The pub, set back from the main road, has a lovely beer garden!

Bateman's House and Gardens

Highlight • Historical Site

A very masculine house, low ceilings and quite dark. Book lovers will get their money's worth!
The garden is famous for its pear trees, and now in April the tulips are blooming beautifully.
We didn't find the mill particularly interesting - even though it is highly praised - but the house and garden were beautiful.
