Molignée Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

Line 150 is being built by the Belgian State Railways to link the lower Sambre to the French Ardennes: two industrial basins connected by waterway but for which the rail represents a significant acceleration.

The Ermeton-sur-Biert - Anhée section (at the gates of Dinant) is also called "Ligne de la Molignée", from the name of the river whose valley it follows. The line has a second section between Jemelle and Dinant. This second section - also called "Line of the Lesse" - is also referenced under line number 152 at the time of the Belgian State company. If the two sections have the same name, it is because initially it was a single line, integrating the Dinant - Houyet junction. The development of the two sections will however be relatively independent. Since the closure of the Jemelle - Houyet section, the remaining section (Houyet - Dinant) has been administratively integrated into line 166.

View of the Meuse and Waulsort Castle

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

From the mouth at Hoek van Holland, the Meuse Route runs along the Meuse to its source. This route is now fully signposted in both directions and takes you past nice historical places in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. The Maas was often a border river, a natural barrier to hold back enemies

Meuse Riverside Path

Highlight • Cycleway

Very nice and relaxed to cycle, especially in the upper Maas valley. There is also less industry here than in the direction of Liège.

The historic town of Dinant lies where the Meuse once divided the rocks of the Ardenne and left a ravine behind. Historically, because the city was once part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and was conquered around 20 times by another world power. Despite a turbulent past, the place with its fantastic location on the Meuse Valley has never lost its beauty. That's why only a few world rulers come to Dinant these days, but water sports enthusiasts and climbing enthusiasts. Vacationers can admire millennia-old rock formations that curve gracefully around the city, or go kayaking along the riverbanks. The most popular sights include the 120 meter citadel and the Norte-Dame collegiate church, which was built in the 13th century. Last but not least, the city also has good taste in music. Jazz is particularly popular here - because the inventor of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax, was born here.

Bayard Rock

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Bayard rock is a spectacular rock needle about forty meters high. A geological curiosity best known for its legend: Bayard is the name of the horse of one of the Duke of Aymon's sons. Cornered in front of his rock, the horse split open the rock with a blow of his hoof.

August 12, 2022,Von Basel via Rotterdam nach Bremen Tag 9 Hermeton-sur-Meuse - Namur
Today only a short stage to Namur. The landscape is as beautiful today as it was yesterday. Dinant is definitely worthwhile, but very crowded and for Namur you should also take a little time and go up to the fortress, preferably with the cable car. You should also not miss the many small streets with the many beautiful little shops …

From Namur to Givet!
In reality from Namur to Dinant is enough (a little after Dinant but hardly more).
We did not know this valley, even if, living in Brussels, we had heard of it. It is absolutely worth the trip!
It is possible to go back and forth during the day, and it is very easy to get by …

Today we leave France 🇫🇷. We cycle down from Givet along the Meuse. In its wild past, the river has carved out some rock bands. 😃

We pass some locks. Then we reach Dinant, a tourist resort nestled tightly against the rocks. I visit the church of Notre Dame. A huge stained glass window on the west side and the …

Along the Maas from Givet via Dinant to Namur.
Well-developed cycle path. Shortly after Givet you cross the border to Belgium again.
Dinant is a place worth seeing, birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Another beautiful section, as the Maas changes direction, there are always new views. In Namur, a trip to the citadel is worthwhile. Panoramic …

Seen and enjoyed a lot! It is not as crowded as many other regions.
Overall a great tour! Even if the 🌞 didn't smile at us all the time! 👍

We cycle along the Maasradweg to Dinant. "La Meuse à vélo" is the first signposted long-distance cycle path in Wallonia. It follows one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe. This tour could also be called the Citadel Route because it includes fortress towns such as Dinant, Namur, Huy and Liège.

The first part after Namur is full of villas. Just after Dinant the most beautiful rock formations so far. Even spotted the rock that Huub was sitting on. Here a bit along the road, but with sufficient bicycle space. Reasonable falafel in Dinant, with a lot of fries as compensation. July 21 is a national holiday in Belgium, in honor …
