Sea of Rocks on the Frauensteig

Highlight • Natural Monument

Here you come past a veritable sea of rocks. Once the slope was used for stone extraction, today the rocks provide a habitat for many animals.

Nixe Isa Statue at Jochenstein

Highlight • Monument

At the bottom of the Jochenstein, a rock rising high from the Danube waters, there once stood a magnificent fairytale castle. The lovely, golden-haired mermaid Isa, a sister of the Loreley of the Rhine, ruled this fairy-tale castle. In shimmering dresses, with a green reed wreath or a garland of colorful flowers in her hair, she appeared to the fishermen on bright moonlit nights. Even when thick fog made river travel dangerous, she showed herself to the fishermen as a warning. But woe to the unfortunate person who followed her seductive temptations or her wonderful singing, he was doomed forever.

A Madonna image, erected as a vow by a mother whose son resisted the temptations, put an end to the beautiful ghostly haunting. Mrs. Isa never showed herself to the Danube boatmen again. The fishermen have never seen or heard of her since then either."

The mermaid on the Jochenstein has since been destroyed by wind and weather, so a replacement had to be created. The well-known artist Michael Lauss from Wegscheid was commissioned to create a new mermaid in 2014 and it was unveiled in 2015 at the site in Jochenstein, where she has since then wistfully watched the Danube flow and happily watched the ships heading to Germany. The "new" mermaid Isa is made of granite and oak and is designed to withstand the weather for a long time with these robust materials.

Ruins of Neujochenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

Only the ruins of the keep remain of the small castle. It is built of small quarry stones, inside and outside remains of plaster have been preserved. The 5-storey structure can be clearly read from the remains of the corner wall, which is approx. 20 m high. With each floor, the wall recedes a little on the inside, creating a support for the ceiling beams. At the very top, an oak roof beam has been preserved - a dendrochronological study suggests that it was built around 1350.

During excavations, a ring wall was also found. The Kleinburg was also surrounded by a moat that separated the area from the mountain plateau.

St. James' Church, Gottsdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. James the Elder is a Gothic hall church in the Gottsdorf district of Untergriesbach in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau. It belongs to the parish of St. James in the parish association of Untergriesbach in the diocese of Passau. The patron saint is James the Elder.

The Gothic, three-bay hall church dates from the middle of the 15th century. A dendrochronological dating of a roof beam in the choir gave the year 1441. In the roof space on the west gable, the year 1451 is inscribed, which was probably transferred when the west tower was rebuilt in 1712 or later. The gallery is dated 1524. The interior was renovated in 1987.
