The Origin of the Name Normafa 🌳

The capital's most famous nature reserve, Normafa, owes its name to a tree.

An ancient beech tree was struck by lightning in 1927, after surviving many storms over the centuries. According to one legend, the tree sprouted at the birth of King Matthias; others claim the great king rested in its shade. It may have only stood on Swabian Hill since the 15th century, but the large tree was certainly centuries old.

The ancient Swabians called the tree Viharbükk (storm beech). It wasn't until the mid-19th century that it received the name Normafa. It was a popular park, and visitors who enjoyed picnicking there included the National Theater ensemble.

During one such outing in 1840, the popular actress Rozalia Schodel Klein imagined that the huge, solitary tree strongly resembled the stage set of Bellini's opera Norma and began singing the aria from that opera beneath the tree. From that moment on, it was called Normafa (Norma Tree), and over time, this name was also applied to the surrounding field.

The memory of this tree is preserved by a commemorative plaque, unveiled in 1967. This verse by the poet Gábor Devecseri, who himself lived in Svábhegy, is engraved on it:

"Norma Tree,
Your branches swayed in the wind through the centuries,
And joyful were the songs of the wanderers around you,
Norma Tree,
May songs come alive in your greenery,
And conquer indifference and conquer the storm."

Normafa Síház 🍽️🍷

"Normafa is familiar to everyone. We go here to play sports, go on hikes, recharge, spend time with our family and friends, or just be by ourselves for a while. We love to be here on weekdays and weekends, in autumn and spring, in sunshine and snow, and even in the rain. Normafa is in our most beautiful childhood memories, among hot teas and poppy-toothed smiles.

We have been working tirelessly since 2021 to renovate the Ski House. We are happy to announce that by autumn 2023 everything will finally be in place, and a new chapter in our shared story can begin in the Normafa Ski House Restaurant, renovated inside and out!

A little taste of what awaits us: your plate will be reminiscent of the past and full of new things, familiar and unknown at the same time. The menu features the best of traditional Hungarian dishes, but you can always count on a little twist. Family programs, live music, gastronomic events, where the We welcome the little ones and four-legged family members."
