Saint John the Baptist Church

Contemporary with the Priory founded by the Benedictines around 1085, our church is made up of 3 parts corresponding to 3 eras. Listed in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments, it is classified as one of the most original.

A first building, the date of construction of which remains unknown, is mentioned in Megève as early as 1202. The three main parts of the current building refer to three different eras:
- the choir, in late Gothic style, dates back to the end of the 14th century
- the nave, for its part, was completely rebuilt at the end of the 17th century
- the front nave, finally, was added in the 1870s
The vaults, dating from 1828, are decorated with paintings by the Italian Mucengo. The onion bell tower was erected in the 18th century and partially rebuilt during the Sardinian restoration. The Stations of the Cross 1956 is the work of Gimel. The stained glass windows date from 1959. The organ, inaugurated in 1842, is the work of the brothers Joseph and Claude-Ignace Callinet, members of a renowned line of organ builders who marked the pre-Romantic era. Since its restoration in 2004, this magnificent instrument has largely regained the appearance and characteristics it originally possessed.
