View of the Ijen Crater

Highlight • Volcano

Find someone who can get you there before the crowds. Be sure to allow enough time and find a place to sleep in Banjuwangi to enjoy the ultimate sunrise. Give the sulfur miners a little money; they have nothing themselves.

Started at 02:00, steep climb with a good path, descent into the crater in the dark only recommended with good footwear. Climb very arduous due to heavy oncoming traffic. Sunrise at 05:30 super beautiful but very cold🥰

First step is: Get up at 1am and try to get to the view point before the crowd does. Why? Because then you need to get back up the crater into a narrow 2 foot wide exposed and treacherous rocky trail while thousands of people are slowly making their way down. I got lucky and arrived there first and only …
An easy asphalt path, but very worthwhile. Gas mask required at the top and a lot of patience at the photo spots. Too late to go into the volcano due to traffic jams and construction work...

Before the trip, I was particularly looking forward to climbing the Ijen volcano with the largest acid lake in the world in the crater. Although we weren't up there at night and didn't see the famous blue (sulphur) fires, it was beautiful shortly after sunrise. Above all, the huge influx of tourists has already started to ebb. The spectacle of …

Beautiful but also very depressing hike to the Ijen volcano. "One of the most toxic places in the world". Sulfur is mined there in large quantities. The miners haul up to 90 kg of sulfur up the mountain, 3 times a day, 7 days a week. Distance approx. 4 km per load.

You shouldn't always take everything shared on social media seriously.

For anyone who's reasonably fit and has been in the mountains before, the tour isn't a big challenge.

What I find "absurd," however, is that there are people who let themselves be transported here in a car, no matter which direction.

The climb is definitely worth it. I was a bit apprehensive at first, but it all went well. If you walk at your own pace and enjoy the views every now and then, it's no problem. I would recommend sturdy shoes, as the weather can change very quickly.
