Fitzroy Island is a tropical paradise, perfect for an outdoor adventure and relaxation. The island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is covered in lush rainforests, surrounded by coral beaches, and can only be accessed by ferry. Arrive early by ferry; the trip from Cairns usually takes about 45 minutes. Once on the island, there is a resort immediately off the dock, a campground, and Foxy's Bar & Café, the perfect place to grab a bite after a bushwalk.

Lighthouse Track

Lighthouse Track follows Fitzroy Island’s old lighthouse service road, and is a relatively steep concrete track that climbs from the camping area up to the lighthouse. It’s a roughly 3.6-kilometre return through the rainforest, with a fantastic lookout on the windy north side of the island and, on a clear day, beautiful views across to Green Island. If you’re here in the winter months, you might be lucky enough to spot migrating humpback whales once you reach the top.

It is a tough way to get up, but worth it. Beautiful view! It doesn't take 2 hours to get here, even if that's what it says on the sign. If you are in a good shape, it takes less than 1h. Enjoy.

Fitzroy Island summit lookout

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this lookout platform at the summit, slabs of granite and windswept casuarina trees frame a breathtaking 360-degree view over the island, the surrounding reefs, and the mainland in the distance. It's the perfect reward at the top of the climb, with the Coral Sea stretching out in every direction. On a clear day, this is one of the best vantage points on the whole island.
