St. Mary's Church Mariendrebber

Highlight • Religious Site

Built around 1140. Court church of the Counts of Diepholz.

According to historical records, a wooden church already stood in Mariendrebber around the year 850. It was located directly on the Hunte River. The Counts of Diepholz replaced it with an early Gothic brick building, constructed as a Gothic hall church with a transept. Only the south wing of the transept remains.

St. Mary's Church was severely damaged several times by fires and warfare. After the destruction during the Thirty Years' War, it was restored between 1655 and 1659. From 1857 to 1860, it underwent further restoration, during which the south gable and almost all the windows were replaced, and the walls were raised. Only the east chancel window retained its original size and profile.

The last Count of Diepholz, Count Frederick II, was buried in a magnificent sarcophagus in St. Mary's Church in 1585.

Among the church's treasured furnishings are the altar from 1665, the wooden pulpit from 1673 depicting the reformer Martin Luther, the Gothic baptismal font, a pre-Reformation tabernacle, and various 14th-century statues of saints.

The Mariendrebber organ dates from 1659 and is one of the most important instruments of the North German Baroque period. It was built by the organ builder Berendt Hus (c. 1630–1676).

Crane Watching in Großes Moor

Highlight • Natural

Autumn is the time of the cranes in the Diepholzer Moor. We went looking for cranes in the Great Moor. We observed hundreds of cranes along the way. Binoculars or even a spotting scope are very helpful, but you can also enjoy them with the naked eye. The trumpet-like calls alone are unmistakable.
If you feel like it, you can go crane hunting with the Fuhrenkamp Conservation Association. An excursion is offered every fall. You can find the date under Dates on the homepage of the Fuhrenkamp Schutzverein (www.Fuhrenkamp-Schutzverein. de).
