St. Paul's Conversion Catholic Parish Church, Thomm

Highlight • Religious Site

The church in Thomm was consecrated to Saint Paul. At first he was an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship by Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience" (see Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 9). Churches with the patronage "Pauli conversion" are comparatively rare.
His attribute, with which he is usually depicted in paintings or as a statue, is the sword with which he was executed, which was a "privilege" under Roman law at the time (quick death and not associated with a long, agonizing agony like other types of execution ) that belonged to the citizens of Rome.
Peter (Rock) is also known together with Paul as the "Princes of the Apostles", their common commemoration day in the calendar of saints is June 29th. The feast of the conversion of Saul, the persecutor of Christians, who then became the "apostle of the people" Paul (which has survived as a figure of speech to this day), i.e. the special title of this church, is on January 25th.

Thomm Miners' Memorial Grave

The Thommen miner's grave

Serious accidents in the slate tunnel.
Over the years, serious accidents have repeatedly occurred in the slate quarry. The former Thommen miner Peter Berens wrote down some of them in his memoirs. The following explanations describe the case of Johann Keiser, who had an accident in the Friedrich Stollen on July 9th, 1934.

Peter Berens remembered: “1934 was a black year for the Thommen miners. Within a few weeks, three Thommen miners fell victim to their job: Johann Keizer had a fatal accident in July 1934. I worked about 10 meters away from him on the Friedrichstollen. I was just walking past him and he said to me, 'You heard we have to get more stones out'. Keizer said that because management had recently criticized their work. It was Keizer's last word. I walked 10 m further to my work and it was already done. A lump that Keizer had knocked loose and hit him together. He died on the way home. In 1905 Keizer already had a serious accident, but it had completely healed. He left behind a wife and five underage children." A stone weighing 80 cents had killed 'Johann Keiser. Just six weeks later, Peter Klassen and Matthias Quint fell victim to their profession in a similar way. A grave was built for all three in the old Thommen cemetery Miners. The stone that killed Johann Keizer served as a tombstone. The inscription on the stone reads as follows: "YOU LEFT THEIR EARTHLY LIFE IN THE SLATE MINE. GOD GIVE THEM THE EW IGE IN HEAVEN .

Saint Barbara "Us Bäbschi"

On the initiative of the Heimat und Verkehrsverein Thomm, under the then chairman Gerhard Keizer, this barbara picture cane was built from local slate in 1988. Many former Thommer miners volunteered to work on the stones and set up the wayside shrine. Sculptor and artist Michael Huber from Oberkirch in the Black Forest designed the figure according to special specifications. Her attribute of a tower (according to legend, her father locked her in a tower dungeon because he wanted to prevent Barbara's turn to Christianity) she received in her right hand. A miner's lamp in his left hand. The model for this was a miner's lamp (carbide lamp) as it was in use in the Thommer slate mines. After a solemn high mass, she was consecrated on Sunday, December 4th, 1988 by Father Hugo Leinz and Deacon Winfried Stadtfeld. Every year, after a long break, the miners' band "Glück Auf" is involved in the celebration of St. Barbara's Day in Thomm. "Source: Text information board
