Main inspection of the Pleiner Viaduct on the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route
Plein Viaduct, length 98 meters, height above valley 31 meters
Unkenstein Tunnel, length 140 meters
Grünewald Tunnel, length 124 meters
The Pleiner Viaduct consists of a five-span arch bridge. The structure is located on the Hasborn - Wittlich section of the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route.
The viaduct, first built in 1910, demolished in 1945, and rebuilt in 1953, is approximately 98 meters long, approximately 31 meters high, and 4.65 meters wide between the railings. It was built on site using reinforced concrete, and the piers, abutments, and side elevations were clad in sandstone. However, the structural concrete is exposed in the arch undersides.
After the railway line was closed by Deutsche Bahn in 1984, the tracks were dismantled in 1989. Before the structure was reopened as part of the Maare-Mosel cycle path in 1998, it was completely renovated.

Großes Schlitzohr Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

The former railway tunnel of the Eifelquerbahn near Mehren, known as the "Großes Schlitzohr," is part of the Maare-Mosel cycle path and offers a refreshing dip in both summer and winter. At 560 meters long, it's already astonishingly long.

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very nice bike path, the one on the edge of the forest. It can be driven very well and comfortably, is very varied due to the route and the changing landscape and is just plain fun!

Pleiner Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

Pleiner Tunnel - Hasborn–Wittlich
Directly after the former Plein train station, approximately 5 km beyond Hasborn, the cycle path leads through the 585-meter-long Pleiner Tunnel. It then continues downhill through deciduous and mixed forests to Wittlich. From the rather rugged Volcanic Eifel, the cycle path descends into the Wittlich Valley. The route passes vineyards and leads into the town of Wittlich.

August 13, 2025,MTB-Tour: Maare - Mosel
From Daun, we climb tough trails up to the Dronke Tower, offering fantastic views of the Eifel from up here on the "crater rim." Now, however, comes a steady descent, mostly along a railway line (the Maare-Mosel cycle path) with cool tunnels, all the way to the Liesertal valley and the Moselle, finally continuing on to Bernkastel. It's already quite …

Wonderful tour!!! 👍🏻😄 The signage to/around the Maare left a lot to be desired! We came to Schalkenmehren on the way around the Maare, but somehow it was badly marked that we bisl helplessly cycled around the Schalkenmehren Maar and then somehow got off the route!😭But otherwise great to drive, through 3 tunnels (possibly take a jacket with you, the …

Hello, my dears. Something easy today. Our tour today only leads a little uphill at the beginning, then longer ups and downs, until after about 30 km it is almost all downhill. After a ride on line 555 (the 555 stands for express, it gets you to your destination quicker) or 300 from Bernkastel to Daun, we start from there …

Recording error, outward journey from Daun missing. 2 lava laps My longest lap would have been annoying, up to the first tunnel from Daun, turned around again, forgot the backpack with the third battery. 😢
