Former Village of Altsheim

To commemorate the end of the 30 Years War (1618-1648) due to the depopulation of the submerged village of Altsheim, the then Ottersheim nature conservation group "Bluethroat" put an information board and a boulder made of yellow sandstone with the inscription "Former settlement Altsheim ”. There is hardly any historical data about the founding of the village. However, according to existing documents and old land maps, the small settlement in this area has existed for several centuries. After the downfall of the village, nobles and the monasteries Eusserthal and Hördt owned land here, which later fell to the Electoral Palatinate. Gradually the houses fell apart, the remains were taken to the surrounding villages as building material. New boundary stones from 1768 bear the characters C P E B and mean Cur Pfalz ErbStock. For several years now, the “Tobacco Tour” cycle path has passed the memorial. In connection with Altsheim, the legendary Colonel of War Bastian Vogelsberger is mentioned, who was born in the village in 1505 and who brought it to fame and fortune. At first he appeared as a teacher in Strasbourg, but soon after was in the service of various kings, both on the German and French sides. Finally, the intrigues of some adversaries lured him into an ambush. Without being able to prove that he was guilty, he was sentenced to death and executed on February 7, 1548 during the "armored Diet of Augsburg". In Weißenburg, where he temporarily lived with his family, he built a stately house in the Renaissance style in 1540, which is still one of the city's sights today. In Ottersheim, a street was named after him as a reminder.
