The Danube Limes once ran here, as the street name suggests. While a border wall was built here during Roman times, today the Roman Hall is a venue for events and gatherings.

April 21, 2025,Welterbesteig Wachau Nummer 13: Unterbergern-Mautern (Stift Göttweig)
The hike starts in Unterbergern. There are repeated views down into the Wachau and Göttweig Abbey. On the way down past the abbey, the Zellergraben (a loess gorge) is probably the highlight. A visit to a wine tavern (Heurigen) concludes the beautiful day. (There is an "outlier" in the tour, as we briefly took a wrong turn due to construction.)

The last "big" day tour of the World Heritage Trail is a surprising highlight for me!
I didn't expect the path to lead me to Göttweig Abbey.

First, however, after a first refreshment in the nice shop, you have to find the right way. As always in towns, it's not entirely easy (unfortunately Komoot isn't helpful either).

Today we're walking along the World Heritage Trail again. We visit the Ferdinandwarte and the Göttweig Abbey. The tour is very varied. Everything in the vineyards is golden at the moment. I still have two stages missing from the World Heritage Trail and I can recommend it to everyone. The Wachau is simply unique,...

I didn't expect much from the last two stages, as the previous sections had already spoiled me with an incredible number of highlights. But I was far from it!

The World Heritage Trail lives up to its name at the end and offers a "best of". It goes through beautiful vineyards, cellar lanes, and the ascent to Göttweig Abbey is …

Our last stop was a panoramic hike in glorious weather. I also liked Göttweig Abbey better than Melk Abbey, as it was less crowded and not quite as pompous. Overall, it was a perfect conclusion to our wonderful hike.

Our World Heritage Trail hike couldn't have ended better 🤗. In sunny 25 degrees Celsius, we walked from Hundsheim via Göttweig Abbey back to Krems. The climb to the abbey was once again tough, but it was worth it 👍. The view of Krems and the vineyards from the right bank of the Danube in this beautiful weather will stay …
