Fragment from our walking experience:
"After a glorified visit to the 'Lady of Schauenberg', we make the sign of the cross on our chest for a safe descent. Beautiful and humble, the calvary journey returns to the valley via a Way of the Cross."

A Marian pilgrimage site, the Notre-Dame du Schauenberg Chapel takes place in Pfaffenheim in the Grand Est. Originally built in the 15th century, it was enlarged in the 16th century before being completely rebuilt in the late 17th century.

After serving as a rest home for the elderly or sick brothers, the monastic buildings underwent a major restoration in the 20th century. Today, visitors can discover the 17th-century chapel with its single nave, its flat cornice and its large pointed triumphal arch. It is now the subject of a registration with the Historical Monuments.

Historic Streets of Gueberschwihr

Highlight • Historical Site

Gueberschwihr is certainly a beautiful wine village with very beautiful and old cellars.
But not only.
Take the time to walk through all the little narrow streets. There are treasures hidden there.
For some the slope is steep. But they are worth the effort.
Many backyards are open. Take the trouble to enter. If you say hello with a smile, no one will say anything to you. Come in and admire.
The shop windows also reflect the whole village.
And what about the church? Enter it.
But also explore the surroundings. For those who know how to see them, historical treasures await you.

The village of Gueberschwihr is cited as such in the 8th century. Many nobles established their residence in the 11th century. Sign of the rich soil, many religious orders and houses and possessions were tithe in wine. This wealth attracted envy and the village was plundered several times during wars.

Today Gueberschwihr, medieval picturesque village is a feature of the Route des Vins d'Alsace. Nestled in the hills in lush greenery, this charming village has retained its original charm and authenticity invites you to discover its rich heritage: half-timbered houses, carved porticos, remarkable architecture and flourishing vineyards delight the eyes of the curious. Overlooking the village square, the spire of the 12th century novel, the jewel of the village, is an essential step for the Route Romane d'Alsace.

This well-preserved city gate marks the historic entrance to the old town of Gueberschwihr. Originally built as part of the medieval defensive structure, the gate today offers an atmospheric view of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. A photogenic point that perfectly introduces your passage through this charming wine village.

Due to bad weather forecast a short tour in the morning, which we finished shortly before the expected rain. Perfect timing. The pilgrimage chapel on the Schauenberg can be reached from both sides via idyllic cross paths through the forest.
