Old Bernau Bathing Pond

Highlight • Lake

In the past, the Bernau people were looking for refreshment here - today the reservoir at the Panke serves the fishermen of the area as a "hunting ground".

The cycle path takes you over 337 kilometers from Berlins Mitte to the Baltic island of Usedom. Of course, the path also invites you to hike along the Panke over shorter distances.

St. Mary's Church, Bernau

Highlight • Religious Site

The St. Mary's Church was probably built around 1240 as a Romanesque basilica. A second church was built around 1280 in the Gothic style. Between 1400 and 1519 the Gothic basilica was converted into a late Gothic hall church. The field stone tower was demolished in 1839, and the brick tower, which is still in existence today and is 57.4 meters high, was built by 1846.

Blaues Wunder Gasometer Bernau

Highlight • Monument

Who does not know, the blue wonder and landmark of Bernau. We are talking about the gas boiler at the gas works.

Between 1931 and 1932, the company BAMAG-MEDIUM AG built a so-called disc gas tank as a technical novelty and advertising object. The 21-meter-high tank, which is still a monument today, has a diameter of 12.6 meters and holds 2,000 cubic meters.

Its novelty was the dry seal by means of a disc. In the container, the disc floated on the gas, which moved up and down depending on the gas level. The disk determined the gas pressure and could be used for the daily control work. The sealing of the piston against the container wall was carried out by means of oil-filled leather cuffs, which worked for years without problems. Nevertheless, this technology did not prevail.

In 1932, the municipal works received the rights of disposal and use of the gas tank. Later, BAMAG places the city before the contractually agreed alternative: purchase of the plant by the city or demolition by the BAMAG. But the city treasury is empty and the BAMAG shies away the high demolition costs. This status quo will last until the end of the Second World War.

The gas station survives the war without major damage. At the beginning of 1952, the gas works were transferred to VEB Gasversorgung Eberswalde. The gas tank is still in operation until 1966, but leaks in the foundation force its final decommissioning.

After the container rusts for more than 30 years, it has become a stain on the city. In 1993, funding is being requested for its refurbishment. In 1994, the gas tank became the property of Stadtwerke Bernau. As part of the renovation, parts of the steel structure and the upper and lower engine house are renewed. The roof has been given a new cover, the container is sandblasted, primed and provided with a double blue paint - since then, the gas boiler is popularly known as the "blue miracle" and once again becomes a landmark of the city.
