Wittenberge Station

Highlight • Rest Area

Nice old station area. Wittenberge in general is also very nice and just as a stage on the Elbradweg an ideal rest stop. Also, you can start a great tour here or end and with the extensive rail links (including RE2 & RE6) drive home.

Wittenberge Harbour Promenade

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Nice harbor. There are many benches and a cafe (beach bar Wittenberge). From the promenade you have a nice view over the harbor. Nice place to enjoy the sunrise or sunset.
On my bike tours I pass by here and usually take a few photos, there are a few motifs here.

Swimming spot on the Elbe

Highlight • River

There is no better feeling like a refreshing dip after exercise. The Elbe is certainly not one of the warmest rivers, but the jump into the water is recommended. At this point it is especially fantastic.

Elbe Bridge, Wittenberge

Highlight • Bridge

From the bridge you have a beautiful view of the Elbe and Wittenberg mountains, but unfortunately there is no footpath or bike path over the bridge. The last time I was here, the footpath on the railway bridge was unfortunately also closed, so I had to ride my bike over the road bridge to reach the other bank of the Elbe and Wittenberg (there is no other option here, far and wide). to cross the Elbe by bike). Since there is quite a lot of traffic here and the cars and trucks usually drive very quickly over the bridge (100 km / h are allowed here), it is not entirely safe to cross the bridge by bike.
It would be really nice if there was a real bike path over the Elbe (near Wittenberge) here. The next bridge with a cycle path is the Dömitzer Elbbrücke, approx. 50km to the west (down the Elbe), or approx. 60km to the south-east, near Tangermünde. So there is no cycle path over the Elbe on a stretch of over 100km, which is a sign of poverty for such a popular cycle path as the Elberadweg (according to Wikipedia the most traveled long-distance cycle path in Germany).

Addendum: The footpath over the railway bridge is currently being renovated. After the renovation there will hopefully be a real cycle path over the railway bridge. There is now an alternative route on which you can cross the railway bridge even during the renovation, namely on the western side of the bridge. Bicycles should still be pushed here (although many do not adhere to this, as the bridge is very long).

Wittenberge has two nicknames. On the one hand they say "Fahrradstadt Wittenberge", which makes you sit up and take notice immediately. However, this has nothing to do with the fact that the city is extremely bike-friendly (which I still do not want to deny), but rather with the fact that in the past most workers of the local industry cycled to work. Which brings me to the next name: "City of Sewing Machines" - for a long time, Nähmaschinenwerk Wittenberge (a branch of Singer) was one of the largest employers in the region.

Wittenberge has a rich history and is beautifully landscaped. Alone the great old town is worth a visit. Not least because of its good train connection (centrally located between Hamburg and Berlin) Wittenberge is a perfect starting point of your bike ride.
