Charcoal Burning Site Near Biburg

Highlight • Historical Site

Not much is left of the former charcoal pile ... but still: historically interesting place with a good display board.

Who murdered Johann Schwab?
The state archives have now dug up an old investigation file on the case of the forest worker who was shot 75 years ago. The rural police at the time investigated for twelve years. Then she finally closed the sensational murder case. The violent death of the 30-year-old forest warden Johann Schwab from Augsburg in March 1947 in a forest near Aystetten has remained unexplained to this day. Johann Schwab, who had returned from the war, found a job as a forest assistant and forest warden at the Biburg forestry office. Because in the turmoil of the post-war period, the black market, groceries. and wood thefts as well, Schwab set out on March 26, 1947 in the afternoon to patrol the woods south of Aystetten. Shortly before nightfall, two dramatic encounters took place within a short space of time. An officer from the Aystetten police station saw three men carrying fabrics and clothes under their arms. They immediately shot the police officer, luckily not hitting. According to the investigation file, the officer returned fire. Either shortly before or shortly after, the three figures must also have met the forest warden. They fired two pistols at the forest worker. Four shots hit. Three bullets - two 7.65 caliber, one 6.25 caliber - lodged in the victim's head, neck and groin. The fourth bullet injured Schwab's thigh. Because the forest worker was free the following day, his disappearance was not noticed by the colleagues in the Biburg forestry office. Because of the shots fired at the police post, the forest was searched with police dogs the following day, March 27. So they found the critically injured and severely hypothermic Schwab, covered with his cloak, with his head on his blood-soaked cap, lying on the ground. The so-called "Schwabmarterl", which commemorates the crime, still stands not far from the spot. The forest warden was taken to the main hospital in Augsburg, where the doctors were unable to save him. He died on March 28, 1947 at 9:15 am.

The playground has a lot of play equipment, mostly made of wood, such as seesaws, rocking animals, a small castle, swings, a goal wall, a large cable car, etc. Many benches invite you to rest.
There is a large covered barbecue area with several seating options. The grill is big and bricked.
There are also two larger wooden houses with tables and benches where you can take a break and where you can find shelter from the sun in summer.
While the children play, the parents can make themselves comfortable there.
