At the end of the 15th century, the brothers Ernst and Albrecht von Sachsen had an artificial pond built near Torgau by decree from the Electorate of Saxony. It should be used for fish farming and thus supply the farm. During the fortress period, the Great Pond also served as a water reservoir for filling the moats. Today it is a dam and flood protection system and at the same time an important nature reserve and local recreation area. The Great Pond is still used for fish farming.

Then as now, the dam is filled with water from the Black Graben. The system also dams the Zinna flood (Red Ford). The Great Pond has an average depth of 1.34 meters and covers an area of 175 hectares. The barrier structure is a five meter high earthen dam.

Torgau Campsite at the Großer Teich

Camping site at the large pond in Torgau. As a cyclist on the Elbe you can spend the night here for around 9 € with a bike and tent. The operator is friendly and instructs you. Mobile phones and power banks can be charged easily in the sanitary wing "nothing is stolen". The place is not overcrowded and is used by many cyclists. It is only a few minutes to the bike path itself. There is a Kaufland and a petrol station in the immediate vicinity. The sanitary facilities are tidy and clean but will be closed after 10 p.m. (only the toilet is free) At night, the space is guarded so that you can leave your material without worry. Unfortunately, access to the lake is not possible because it is in other hands. As a cyclist, the place is highly recommended.
