Eichenberg Church

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1062 and also in 1194, the village in Orlamünde was confirmed in parish documents by the archbishop of Mainz. Traces from that time can be found in the substance of the choir and the lower nave. The pulpit altar with floral ornaments and carved tendrils and the flat wooden ceiling from 1691 date from the 17th century.

An organ purchased in 1705 was demolished in 1875 and replaced by a Gerhard organ. In 1787 the big bell and the small bell were bought. The small bell survived the time in the Second World War in the bell cemetery, from where it was picked up again after the war.

In 1986 the church was in such a desolate condition that there was a risk of it collapsing. In 1999 the roof repairs began and in 2005 the interior work. In 2009, the facade renovation completed the overall renovation.

St. Sebastian Church Dienstädt

Highlight • Religious Site

A special feature that attracts people interested in art from across the region is the altar: the carved winged altar was installed in 1510 and 1573. It was painted by the so-called "Dienstadt Master", but his name is unknown or uncertain. He is said to come from the Saalfeld school; other experts suspect Zwickau's master Hans Witten or his pupil Georg Salmenbach to be the creators.

You can see the altar shrine with a blue sky, golden stars and the saints who were called upon to intercede with God in times of need and distress. The Virgin Mary is shown as the Queen of Heaven, surrounded by the sun, the moon beneath her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. The three figures of saints are Anna, the protector of the miners, Saint Elisabeth, who is highly venerated in Thuringia, the Holy Helpers St. Catherine and St. Barbara, Saint Erasmus, the intercessor of mothers, and Saint Sebastian, the Holy Helper in times of plague and the patron saint this church.

Completely folded up, the walkable altar showed images from the life of Mary. Unfortunately, this was replaced in 1888 by simple ornamental painting as it could not be restored. With the double side wings folded open, the twelve apostles appeared, three at a time on four panels. Fully opened, the festive splendor of the carvings unfolded. In the midst of the six figures of saints, the Madonna floated on a crescent moon and in a golden robe, smiling mysteriously, holding the baby Jesus in her arms, who was holding out a ball to the devout viewer with both hands.

The painting is in the style of Lucas Cranach and is reminiscent of his 1513 altarpiece for the church in Neustadt/Orla. This carved altar is of the highest artistic and church art historical rank.
War, albeit with damage.

After that, the late Gothic carved altars no longer corresponded to the taste of the time and gave way to modern pulpit altars. The citizens of Dienstädt also rebuilt their church, built a kind of sacristy in the front part of the choir, dismantled the altar and kept its individual parts there. Completely out of sight, these only came to light again in 1888 when the sacristy was dismantled. Paul Lehfeldt included the altar as particularly valuable in his work "Building and Art History of Thuringia". The most recent restoration was in the church workshops in Erfurt between 1993 and 1996. St. Georg Church Großeutersdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

Großeutersdorf was mentioned in a document as early as the 12th century with a church. The crypt under the chancel with its barrel vault is the oldest part of the church. The choir tower was built around 1500. The thick walls and loopholes emphasize the defensive character of the church. The sacrament niche with an iron door and carved figures in the chancel also date from this period. In 1842 the upper octagonal floor was added to the choir tower.
