View of the Rhine Lock

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Rhine is one of Europe's most important rivers and is approximately 1,233 km long. Its source lies in the Swiss Alps, where it originates from several mountain streams. From there, it first flows through Switzerland and then partly forms the border between Germany and France, before continuing through Germany and finally the Netherlands.
At Rotterdam, the Rhine divides into several distributaries and finally reaches the North Sea. Its catchment area is very large (approx. 185,000 km²) and includes many tributaries such as the Moselle, Main, or Neckar.
The Rhine is of great importance to Europe:
Shipping: One of the world's most important waterways for trade and transport
Economy: Connection of many industrial and port cities
Nature: Habitat for numerous animal and plant species
Energy: Utilization through hydropower in the Alpine regions
Due to its location and use, the Rhine is considered one of Central Europe's most important lifelines.

The shore is very far, very gently sloping. When the Rhine level is medium or low, it is good to bathe here.

Seltz Gravel Lake

Highlight • Lake

The quarry pond or the Epple gravel pit is close to the Plittersdorf-Seltz Rhine ferry.
There is also a campsite with a lido on the lake by the jetty.

The lake can be circumnavigated. There are plenty of fishing spots on the west bank. On the east bank you walk a bit along the gravel works on a wide asphalt road.

Plittersdorf–Seltz Rhine Ferry

Highlight • Structure

The Plittersdorf–Seltz Rhine Ferry (in French: Bac Seltz–Plittersdorf or Bac de Seltz) is a cable ferry across the Rhine south of Karlsruhe. It connects the French municipality of Seltz in Alsace on the left bank of the Rhine with the German town of Plittersdorf, a district of Rastatt, on the right bank. It is operated by the French European Community of Alsace. Use of the ferry is free of charge.

After the service was interrupted for five years following an accident, operations resumed in September 2010 with the newly built ferry Saletio. From October 2010 to July 2011, the ferry was out of service due to technical problems. Since then, it has transported around 100,000 cars, 60,000 bicycles, and 30,000 pedestrians per year.

The ferry is fun. But it is not a pure cable ferry. And the frequency of the crossings is usually quite low, so bring enough time with you.

April 6, 2025,🇫🇷Bonjour Alsace - Sauerdelta und Baggerseen bei Munchhausen ☀️😎
A wonderful nature reserve. This is where the Sauer River flows into the Rhine, and the estuary delta is a large floodplain with many amphibians and birds.

Currently, no annoying mosquitoes 👌.

A wonderful afternoon, and of course, we were rewarded with a tarte flambée 😋

On the way home from our short vacation we made a detour to the neighbors and stretched our legs properly 😅...
The result is a beautiful round through the nature reserve of the Sauer Delta.
Except for the piece along the gravel plant (I wouldn't have needed it), the tour is very nice to walk and the nature reserve sometimes …

Relaxed little round in the Sauer Delta, sometimes without altitude, after we had brought our daughter to the train in Rastatt.

Today we went to the ceramics market at the gallop track in Iffezheim. It used to be bigger, but there are still extremely beautiful and selected goods. Afterwards we drove to Seltz, ate at the Auberge du Rhin and did this little tour.
