An interesting perspective of the city opens up from the tunnel on the Danube promenade at the foot of the Braunsberg.

Ruins are always worth a visit! It's on the path, so it's not a special detour. The ruins are not particularly large. At the top there is a small viewing area with a bench. Beautiful view of the Danube included.

The 346 meter high Braunsberg above Hainburg offers a fantastic view over the city and the wide Danube meadows. The viewpoint is located on the recommended Celtic path around Hainburg and there is also a palisade at the top including a small watchtower in the Celtic style, which was built here in the 1st century BC. lived.

From here, there is a wonderful view of Hainburg on the Danube and the mighty river that shapes the landscape. The historic old town, the Danube floodplains, and the gentle hills of the surrounding area combine to form a particularly charming panorama. A place where the beauty of the region can be experienced at a glance. 🌊🏘️🌄

At Braunsberg you have an excellent view of the Hundsheim Mountains, the Danube, the city of Bratislava and far into Marchfeld. There is also a large parking lot at the top if you come up by motorbike or car. 😊👍

Water Tower (Götzenturm), Hainburg

Highlight • Historical Site

Water Tower (Idol Tower), Hainburg
The Götzenhof in the north-eastern area of the city was traditionally owned by the so-called Lords of Röthelstein, named after the extensive castle and fortifications located about 2 km downstream on a steep rocky massif above the Danube. Incidentally, Röthelstein Castle was built around the middle of the 12th century. Founded in the 13th century by the Sonnberg family, who originally sat in the central castle on the Schlossberg. They were among the most powerful city ministers in Hainburg. The Götzenhof served them primarily as a power base in the city, as well as for managing their huge possessions and fishing grounds in the opposite Danube meadows, and undoubtedly also for Danube trade. The only, but extremely monumental, remnant of the Götzenhof is the one from the first half or shortly after the middle of the 13th century. Built, octagonal idol tower, it forms the northeast corner of the city fortifications. Its 1st and 2nd floors fulfilled exclusively military tasks (especially covering the nearby harbor area), while the 3rd floor, with its late Romanesque double windows, undoubtedly served a representative residential function. The adjoining eastern city wall is probably one of the few places in the city fortifications that, similar to the Vienna and Hungarian Gates and the curtain wall of the castle, had an external defensive gallery from which the attackers could be fought effectively from above.
This information was kindly provided by Mr. Mag. Scholz and Mr. MMag. R. Woldron provided. Many thanks to the Monument Office, the Vienna City and State Archives, the Boltzmann Institute and the Lower Austrian State Archives.

A round trip through the Hainburger Au and Braunsberg and no wolves spotted 🐺 😜

Caution: On the way back, after the Maria-Lourdes devotion, there's a shortcut towards Braunsberg, where you have to bend down to avoid low-hanging branches. If you stand up too early, you might be struck in the face by a dangerous (partially broken or cut) branch, which can be very dangerous for your eyes!

The Röthelstein castle ruins are now part of Hainburg an der Donau. In the High Middle Ages, they protected the Duchy of Austria on the Danube against the Hungarian kingdom.

Röthelstein is one of those rare castles that has survived as a ruin, although it was already a ruin in the late Middle Ages.

A pure nature experience in the Donau Auen National Park. First we went along the Danube and then up the Braunsberg, with wonderful views of Hainburg, the Danube and Slovakia. Away from the hiking trails, a sea of spring flowers embedded in beautiful green 🌸🪻🌼 ☀️

I originally chose the beautiful, large parking lot behind the Schlossberg so that I could visit the castle at the end of the tour, but unfortunately I didn't have time. The Schlossberg is also a nice alternative as a starting point.

Beautiful hike in nature with Danka, whom I met in Piešťany during a spa cure. We had planned to continue hiking together in Bratislava, but it took a month to implement it🙈, that's how it is with good intentions 🤷😁
The Danube floodplains on the Austrian side are always worth a visit, especially if you are looking for pure nature …

Finally another Sunday tour with the NW group. We met on the Danube, opposite Devin Castle, then walked a nice stretch along the Danube to the Röthelstein castle ruins and from there uphill to Braunsberg.
The temperatures were pleasantly mild and the sun was kind to us ☀️🤗 However, there was a fresh wind blowing above and in unprotected places …
