Stanage Pole

Highlight • Monument

Stanage Pole is a landmark that denotes the border between Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. A wooden pole has stood here for hundreds of years and would have been useful for travellers on the old packhorse route, Long Causeway.

Whether on gravel or MTB, the riding around here is superb. Whichever way you head, you’re in for a treat and some epic views of the Peak District.

Long Causeway Gravel Trail

Highlight • Trail

This superb gravel trail links Redmires Reservoirs and Stanage Edge with untold riding opportunities in Hope Valley, Ladybower and beyond. From Stanage, you descend into a heart-melting view of the Peak District set below the rugged gritstone escarpment.

The compacted-gravel isn’t too technical. But watch out for the drainage ditches that cross the path, as they could cause a problem on a rigid bike if you hit them at speed while busy admiring the view.

Stanage Edge is an iconic gritstone escarpment that towers above the charming village of Hathersage to the south. It dominates the local area for miles around as it runs along high above for just about four miles (6 km) north to south. The views of it along the Dale Road are particularly good, and the stretch of road is pretty great too. All in all, a beautiful cycle ride.
