Varenholz Castle

Highlight • Castle

A castle was first mentioned in 1188, which was then owned by the Lords Vornholte. In 1323, Simon I. zur Lippe acquired the castle from the lords of Varenholz and was thus able to extend his dominion in the north to the Weser.

The construction history of today's palace complex goes back to the year 1540. Between 1591 and 1600, Count Simon VI. zu Lippe expand the castle into one of the most important buildings of the Weser Renaissance.

Under the National Socialists, the castle served as a training center for the Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM). From 1945 to 1949 the UFA Universum Filmgesellschaft was housed in the buildings. The teacher Elisabeth Engels then set up a boarding school on the premises.

Today the castle is owned by the Lippe Regional Association and houses Schloss Varenholz GmbH, a boarding school for child and youth welfare.

View from Biershöhe

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the beer level you can see the chimneys of the 'Gemeinschaftskraftwerk Veltheim'. Foresight proved the policy when it shut down the coal power plant in March 2015. For the complete dismantling or a rededication will probably go years into the country. The planning time alone should be two years or more.
