Worpswede Windmill

Highlight • Monument

After the report of the office Osterholz from the year 1836 the windmill Worpswede was built in 1701 by Claus Segelken. For the operation of the mill he had to pay a Canon of 12 Reichstalern. As early as 1723, however, he sold the mill to 4 landlords because of economic difficulties, and in 1737 they commissioned the ministry to Meierrecht. From now on, it was meierrechtlich the Crown Prince Worpswede, the Countess Elenora of Eschwege attached. In 1838, the structure, probably a post-windmill, is so outdated that it is now bigger and more economical than Erdholländer. This mill was repeatedly overhauled several times, such as 1936, 1959 and most recently 1995. Until 1956, the mill had a codend that was removed to work now with a wind rose modern. The many general overhauls - often carried by donations - are striking in the history of the mill. The economic situation with a relatively small area of arable land in the surrounding area must not have yielded golden fruits for every miller.

Today, with a white painted hull and white / red wing, it is a landmark of the artist's village of Worpswede.

Hamme River

Highlight • River

One can assume that without the Hamme river, Worpswede and the Teufelsmoor would not have developed as we know it today. The Hamme runs through part of the extensive moorland that was created in a shallow lake over a period of around 10,000 years after the last ice age. Until the lock in Ritterhude was built in 1876, water was able to flow unhindered into parts of the moorland via the Weser and its tributaries. The construction of a lock in earlier times shows the importance of the Hamme.

The Teufelsmoor was already being drained in a planned manner around 1750. A number of canals were built, which were increasingly used as transport routes as the economic importance grew. This is where the type of ship known today as the peat barge was developed, which only existed and still exists in the Teufelsmoor. The peat ships that brought the dried peat to Bremen reached the Hamme via the canals and ditches.

The Hamme is 48 km long. The river rises north of Osterholz-Scharmbeck at an altitude of 45 m above sea level. By Worpswede, the gradient has already been reduced considerably and the water flows mostly evenly towards Bremen. In the last two centuries, the Hamme has been a vital trade route for the Teufelsmoor region. At times (around 1850), more than 1,600 peat ships are said to have sailed the river and at a customs office and in Findorffer harbor in Bremen, where the boatmen brought their peat, up to 500 ship movements were recorded on some days.

Broad Water

Highlight • Lake

The nature reserve "Wide Water" has the shape of a triangle and is also known as the "wet triangle" because of the many streams and lakes. The area is home to many birds that you can watch with a little patience. In the nature reserve there is also the lake of the same name, Broad Water.

September 14, 2022,Teufelsmoor
After two days of art in the footsteps of Heinrich Vogeler, we went to Teufelsmoor today.
Except for a short stretch along the road, it is an easily walkable path.

And another Sunday with brisk wind and cool temperatures. But the sun was shining and there were no serious rain clouds in sight. So we set off on an unpaved path towards Worpswede Mill and then along the road to Hamme and Neu Helgoland. After a short stop at Hammehafen, we walked along the meadows to the Teufelsmoor milking house. …

On the occasion of a city trip to Bremen, I had planned a day for the hike around the Teufelsmoor, as this hike was listed in an older hiking guide as one of the dream hikes in Germany.
However, this tour disappointed me a bit. I had imagined it to be "boggy" overall, roughly like the Mecklenbruch moor in Solling, …

Today I was in the area around Worpswede 🏘️ - the artists' village 👩‍🎨, located northeast of Bremen 🏙️.

I started from the apparently relatively new Teufelsmoor hiking car park 🚗 (not yet visible on Google Maps) at the Brinkhoff farm café north of Worpswede 🏘️. Flat land with a stiff, cold breeze today 🥶 - so after 200 m …

Flat, wide and green - Hamme lowland. We actually found the quiet peace that we've all been missing so much for the past two weeks here today. At least for the moment and that felt good.

The Breite Wasser is a moor lake, located between Worpswede and the village of Teufelsmoor. It is located at the junction of the Hamme and the Beek, two small rivers that run through the Hammeniederungen nature reserve. The lake is known for its many water birds and the impressive landscape that surrounds it.

A beautiful hike with a wide view over beautiful meadows and small rivers.
This path can only be walked outside of the breeding and breeding season because the last section is closed during this time to protect many birds and small mammals.

Showing Translation

With pleasant temperatures and flat land, today we walked across the Hamme meadows past cows and horses - pure idyll.
