Plaspoelpolder Pumping Station

Highlight • Monument

The Gemaal van de Plaspoel- en Schaapweipolder is a former steam pumping station in the Dutch province of South Holland, built in the period 1873-1874. The pumping station served to drain the Plaspoel- and Schaapweipolder and discharged into the Delftse Vliet. In 1925 the pumping station was modernized and the paddle wheel was replaced by a centrifugal pump. Since 1930, the drainage of the Plaspoelpolder and the Schaapweipolder has been merged. The area to be drained then amounted to approximately 755 hectares. An electric motor was installed in 1989.

Delftsche Vliet Canal

Highlight • River

The Delftsche Vliet is a canal with a length of 4.6 kilometers between Delft and Rijswijk, and is part of the Rijn-Schie Canal, which forms the connection between the Oude Rijn near Leiden and Overschie. This connection partly follows the course of the Corbulo Canal, the connection between the Rhine and the Meuse that the Romans built in the first century.
In the middle of the 12th century, the connection was dug between Delft and the old canal, which ran to the current location of the Hoornbrug: the Delftse Vliet. The Delftse Vliet was widened from 1891 to 1894. The section from Delft to Overschie is called the Delftsche Schie.

The Elsenburgerbos is a landscaped wooded walking park with steep paths, lawns and rolling hills in the Dutch municipality of Rijswijk (South Holland).
The park was created after years of being used as a garbage dump. Rubble remains from The Hague neighborhoods such as the Stationsbuurt, which were renovated in the 1970s, were dumped in this area at that time. The original clay layer was excavated before the area came into use as a garbage dump and was dumped back on the waste during the construction of the park.
