Vineyard on the Wijngaardberg

Highlight • Structure

The Hageland with its Wijngaardberg in Wezemaal knew how to please us. With the blessing of Martinus and Job, we climbed the mountainside without fear. Flemish Tuscany. The missed holiday feeling was almost immediately satisfied. (Our first steep path was a miss due to euphoria).
Immediately regrouped and climbed the correct steep mountain path. We enjoyed beautiful views. Once at the top, 'The Stone Wall' is overcome without any problems. On top of the mountain we stroll through different types of orchards. We must return here in blossom time. Hollow roads lead us to the north side. Impressed, we descend majestically. Old stately beech trees resemble the pillars of a cathedral. They reach to heaven and prop up the firmament. The canopy provides protection and cooling on hot days. You can experience the Wijngaardberg in every season. We have gained another experience... It has done well 🍇🍷🍷

Wijngaardberg Wine Wall

Highlight • Monument

The vineyard wall on the Vineyard Mountain was built for three reasons: to protect the sensitive vines from the north wind, to relieve the vineyard soil from the excess iron sandstone and to form a barricade against unwanted animals from the higher forest.

Wijngaardberg Iron-Sandstone Quarry

Highlight • Natural Monument

There are a total of three iron sand quarries on the Wijngaardberg. One on the southern slope and two on the northern. In 1441, the oldest known mention of a Wezemaal quarry, there is mention of the "well" from which the lord had stone pulled: probably the later so-called 'Devil's Well'. The name of this quarry indicates the mysterious nature of the place and also refers to the potential danger of the steep walls. From the 15th century onwards, mention is made of the lord's quarry, which supplied material for the church in 1484, and from which the stone for the new vault ribs of the south transept was supplied in 1613. As late as 1829, the quarry of the Duke of Ursel (scion of the last noble family that owned the barony of Wezemaal until the French Revolution) supplied iron sandstone for the parsonage. This concerns the large quarry at the top of the southern flank of the Wijngaardberg. In some places in the carved walls you can still see marks from the stonemason's company. Behind the western head of the mountain with the Sacred Heart statue on it was a third quarry: that quarry was even reopened in 1961 for the large-scale restoration of the church (1960-1964). The fossilized river ripples are still clearly visible in this quarry (Natuurpunt Oost-Brabant, 2014). The old quarry walls were cut flat during extraction but are now weathered by the ravages of time. Now there is also a clear distinction between the iron-rich protruding banks and the erosion-sensitive sandy layers that have worn away. A variant of the Wijngaardberg walk with a detour along the blossom bar on the Mensberg. A top walk with views, varied landscape and steep climbs, along vineyards and orchards and through forest. The blossoming broom, apple blossoms and blossom bar provide an extra:-)

It's been a while since we climbed the Wijngaardberg, so today we walked over this mountain again, past orchards and vineyards, past the impressive Wijngaardmuur, through sunken roads, via steep slopes and ditto descents. And it was also a beautiful spring day. So enjoy!
