Wental Rock Sea

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Wental offers you a unique nature experience. Countless stone pillars and bizarre rock formations of limestone line up in the valley. They bear such impressive names as Felsenmeer, Wentalweible, Sphinx or Bischofshut. It is best if you take enough time to explore this unique place.

Wentalweible Rock Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

Spitz the Wentalweible towers as a rock tower in the sky. Legend has it that a notorious and stinging shopkeeper ran through the valley when suddenly a thunderstorm hit. When she looked up, she was struck by lightning and she turned into the stone pillar. Only in the night of November 30 to December 1, she still wails whining through the Wental.

Wental rock formations

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

On the Alb plateau, southeast of the neighboring municipality of Bartholomä, the Wental extends across the Essingen district to the Steinheim basin.
This unique natural landscape arose from the riverbed of the Wedel watercourse. When the Jurassic Sea withdrew and the Alb began to carburate about 150 million years ago, it gnawed deeper and deeper into the rock until it completely drained away. What remained was the valley and the strangely shaped dolomite rocks. They are an impressive testimony to the power of water.
These quaint and bizarre rock formations extend over almost the entire Wental. However, they accumulate in the area of the rocky sea, so that the impression of a true flood of different rock formations arises.
The Felsenmeer in the Wental is a magnet especially for families with small children.
Due to the large number and sometimes rare animal and plant species, the former "Wental" landscape protection area has been upgraded to a nature reserve.

When you come out of the rock valley, the meadows around Bartholomä open up. Very nice to go for a walk.

Relaxed tour through the Wental and Hirschtal, always nice. It's worth stopping at the Wental Gasthof 😋

A beautiful, easy tour through the Wental valley. Shaded and sunny at times, with a nice stop halfway along the way.

1) From the Wental car park, first look at the Felsenmeer and then into the Wental and Gnannental, all nice to walk, lots of forest and rock. …
