The earliest mention of the Cobb is 1294 but it was probably built before that. The current structure mostly dates to 1817 when it was rebuilt using Portland stone after a severe storm damaged the previous version.
The Cobb appears in both Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion and John Fowles' novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
It's a nice place to walk out to on a calm day but you're likely to get soaked or worse if the sea is high.
