St James' Church, Werfen
Highlight • Religious Site
Both at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as in the 16th and early 17th centuries, there were documented Gothic alterations and additions.
After 1600, the church may have been in a desolate condition, as evidenced by the construction activity in the early 17th century. At this time, the former choir tower belonging to the original Romanesque church became a freestanding tower.
Furthermore, the tower floor was also heaped up to today's level, which is two meters higher than at the time of the Gothic church, which makes the tower a little underproportionate today.
In the years 1652 to 1657 there was a new building of today's baroque church.
After entering one is surprised on the one hand by the wooden Kasettendecke, which was probably preferred for reasons of cost a vault, and on the other hand by the impression that the church is more like a baroque ballroom.
Most of the Baroque interior decoration dates back to the time of the new building.
