Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Andermatt

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul, Andermatt
An avalanche claimed the lives of seven churchgoers near St. Kolumban on February 16, 1601. This may have been the impetus for the construction of a new parish church. The Hospental and Realp residents demanded a church in the middle of the valley. When Christoffel Christen agreed to provide the building land in Andermatt and donate the pulpit, the location was decided. The richly furnished parish church was built on it in 1602. It has a magnificent baroque interior and is the most important church in the valley

Andermatt train station

Highlight • Rest Area

Train station, Andermatt
Andermatt train station is a junction station of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) in the north of the municipality of Andermatt in Uri. In addition to the regional trains of the MGB and the Glacier Express, the Andermatt train station is an important hub for the post bus routes over the surrounding Alpine passes. The station was opened during the First World War on July 11, 1917, when the Schöllenenbahn began operating, initially only in summer. Year-round operation began in 1925 and the main line of the Furka-Oberalp Railway from Disentis to Brig was opened the following year.
At the station there is a memorial plaque in honor of Ludwig Danioth, who fought for the construction of the Furka Base Tunnel as President of the Furka-Oberalp Railway and Council of States of the Canton of Uri.
The new pedestrian underpass on the east side of the station was opened at the end of 2017 together with the commissioning of the Gütsch-Express gondola lift in the ski arena. This connects the future main building on the north side with the valley station of the gondola lift and the village on the south side of the station.

Suvorov Monument

Highlight • Monument

A Russian monument in central Switzerland ??? Yes, General Suworow and his army, fighting the Napoleonic troops, came from Italy across the Gotthard Pass. Hence the monument on the pass!

The Suvorov Monument is also located near the Devil's Bridge. The crossing over the Reuss was the scene of a battle between the Russians and the French on September 25, 1799, during the War of the Second Coalition.

The tunnel could also be used to avoid a blown bridge crossing. The tunnel is part of the "Schöllenrundweg" at the Teufelsbrücke, actually also has military motives and is really cold and damp when passing through it.

Residual water from the Urnerloch water catchment that is not used by the Göschen power station is still used here and its power provides more than 100 households with real green electricity. Even this water still has enough strength.
