View of Lake Thun and Surrounding Mountains

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The panorama over Lake Thun and its surrounding mountains is impressive. It is the special mix between the deep blue of the lake, the lush green of the alpine meadows and forests and, depending on the season, the grey/white of the partly snow-covered mountain peaks. Here you should slow down the pace of the hike and give the soul and the eye time to let the impressions work.

Lake Thun
Lake Thun is the sixth largest lake in Switzerland and the largest lake that lies entirely in the canton of Bern. It is located in the Bernese Oberland between Thun at the western end and Interlaken at the eastern end. On the northern shore are the communities of Hilterfingen, Oberhofen, Sigriswil, Beatenberg and Unterseen. On the southern shore, the communities of Spiez, Krattigen, Leissigen and Därligen have a share of the lake's surface area. Depending on the water level, Lake Thun is at an altitude of around 558 metres above sea level.
The Aare, the main tributary of Lake Thun, flows in from Lake Brienz in the east and drains the lake in the west near Thun. Other important tributaries include the Kander, the Spissibach, the Lombach, the Grönbach and the Guntenbach. The lake stretches over a length of 17.5 km and is a good three kilometres wide. The deepest point of Lake Thun is in front of Leissigen and is 215m.
It is possible to walk around the lake and is around 60km long. The multi-day hike can be walked almost exclusively along the shore. At Sigriswil and Leissigen there are also spectacular suspension bridges over streams that flow into the lake.
