Kiel Hörn

Highlight • River

The tip of the port of the state capital Kiel, which forms the southern end of the Kiel Fjord, is called the Hörn or “Die Hörn”.

The Hörn has been spanned by the three-part Hörnbrücke (three-way bascule bridge) for pedestrians and cyclists since 1997. Near the main train station, it connects the city center on the west bank with the Gaarden-Ost district and the Norwegenkai on the east bank. The high-rise center at Germaniahafen was completed there in 2007. Various traditional work boats are housed in the adjacent Germaniahafen. On the west bank, the station bridge is a landing stage for the regular ferries of the towing and ferry company Kiel in regional traffic, among others. to Laboe.

Originally the Hörn reached approx. 200 m inland. From 1886 to 1890 the overburden that arose from the expansion of the docking facilities in the nearby shipyards was heaped up. This gave the Hörn its current rectangular shape. Historically, the Germania shipyard, which primarily manufactured submarines, was located on the Hörn. The city of Kiel has been working on a redevelopment concept for this former industrial area since 1989. The HDW shipyard with its characteristic gantry cranes is still located north of the Hörn on the east bank.

After the Norwegian terminal in 1997, the high-rise center at Germaniahafen and the Hörn Campus building at the front of the Hörn were the first buildings to be completed as part of the Kai-City Kiel project.
