Swastika Stone

Highlight • Natural Monument

Of all the ancient carved stones that are liberally scattered across Ilkley Moor, the Swastika Stone is the most famous. The theory goes that the Swastika-esque patterns in the rock were carved by occupying troops during the Roman era. Although the pattern is unique to Britain, similar designs have been discovered in Italy, lending weight to the hypothesis that the visiting troops imitated the designed they had seen closer to home.

The Glen Woodland and Stream

Highlight • Waterfall

Lovely stretch of woodland with a little waterfall and pond/dam. Drops down to a reservoir. There was an alternative route that skirted the edge of the woods on a track which seems popular with mountain bikers.

The Poetry Seat, Ilkley Moor

Highlight • Monument

The Poetry Seat on Ilkley Moor - situated in the remains of an old shooting lodge, the aim is for visitors to sit, enjoy the views and be inspired to write poem (or read one that another person has submitted). The project was commissioned by Ilkley Literature Festival.

White Wells Spa Cottage and Plunge Pool

Highlight • Historical Site

This spa bath, believed to have been built around 1700, was a key part of Ilkley's establishment as a desirable spa town. Today, visitors can still take a dip in the plunge bath, though they'll need to supply their own bathing costumes. Hikers are more likely to make use of the cafe and toilets here. Amongst the many visitors to White Wells, Charles Darwin is perhaps the most notable. He 'took the waters' here in 1859.
